Goodbye S6, Hello...

Almost as bad as the Evo to a pure gaymobile thread.

Still, least this one is a nice looking. Everything is right except the 320d bit :p

Enjoy your new F10, I like the interior.. btw What became of the S6?

In a few months I'm going from 300hp to 177hp and I'm not really looking forward to it. There's no way I would do it voluntarily!

I went from 600 to 200.. its not the end of the world and can still be fun in the right car. :P

Nice car and appreciate the thought process behind the change.

Can the larger Nav screen be retrofitted? The small screen looks odd.

S2000, E46 M3, Golf R32.

BMW 520d:o

My thoughts too tbh.

Seems an odd choice to settle on, that sàid, he's now one of the many many many other 520d's out there....

Good car, but the last thing I'd have thought you'd opt for tbh.

Having something that will be as comfortable and suited to 'getting around' as that F10 520d will be is perfect for DRZ. He doesn't want to get off another one of his european work related jaunts, get into his car and listen to rattles and buzzes as he drives back home. He wants to just get there and go to bed. Probably.

Getting a second car to go with this and trash within an inch of its life on track is the perfect combination for him.

Not everyone wants a fire breathing day to day car. I totally 'get' this purchase, even if some will question the engine choice.

The issue regarding engine choice - as Fox will support - is there really are a handful of cars that aren't 520d's. This means finding a decent example that is appropriately priced is challenging.

Probably best suited to what you want, but I personally couldn't live with the lack of spec.
Could you not source one with at least pro nav?

No idea but not something I'd want to do if it affected the warranty.

If you'd have asked me 6 months ago, I'd have agreed with you. Unfortunately, stuff breaking is phenomenally expensive not only for the actual repair but if and when it causes you me to miss a flight (which has happened to me twice). I guess I'm just getting to the point in my life where I'm past being prepared to spend thousands upon thousands running a performance car just to have a performance car. I could have got an M car for this money but I'd just be signing up for even more expense for very little gain day to day.

Pretty much spot on.

Probably but this car was very near, the correct gearbox, in my preferred colour combination (the interior colour was non-negotiable) and with a mileage that qualified for the better warranty, has Service Inclusive, they didn't flinch about taking the S6 off me for what I'd consider to be reasonable and as I think I posted about above, I didn't feel like I could have taken the time to wait it out for the unicorn car with all boxes ticked without the S6 scrapping itself. I was less than 7 days away from that last gearbox episode being out of warranty.

The spec isn't suicidally terrible, sure its got the small-screen Nav but for the actual things you just can't live without these days (which admittedly are mostly standard) like bluetooth, auto lights/wipers, parking sensors, dual-zone climate etc its just fine.

Fair enough, enjoy it :)
And you've also stopped any thoughts I had in the back of my mind about V8 C5s. Thanks :p

Sensible purchase in honesty man and the F10 does look lovely.

Interested to see what economy you get.

Fingers crossed for no more bills!

I went from 340BHP to 125BHP so you will probably have to get used to the adjustment but once you are used to it, it's like you haven't driven anything else.

Thanks Nath!

I don't need to cross my fingers too much, I'm just in the process of arranging the BMW Comprehensive warranty for it which will alleviate almost all the risk :)

I've gone up and down power a few times (400-135, 450-95 & 280-150) and the biggest difference was swapping fuel types. The petrol 280 to diesel 150 was terrible for about a month until I "relearned" how to drive a diesel properly.

I would say I'm sad to see the S6 go, but i've seen the amount of grief its given you and I think it was inevitable really.

Nice replacement - like the look of the later BMW's and it's clearly a sensible choice for what you need it for. I've driven that engine in a couple of guises and I was really pleasantly surprised at its refinement, driveability and how well it hides its oil burning fundamentals.

Looking forward to seeing the "fun" car when you get it - Enjoy ;)

Got to be honest, this wasn't what happened with me, which was really unfortunate.

I went from an E46 330i to a Clio RS 200 and regretted the decision almost immediately. And the bhp is within ~15% of each other! I immediately noticed the lack of torque and the power delivery difference was something I just couldn't get used to.

I ended up keeping the 200 for a year and then buying... an E46 330Ci. I got in, and immediately felt at home with the power delivery. I didn't get used to the Clio 200 :(

Having said that the car was an obvious downgrade overall, I'm sure this F10 will suit the OP perfectly.

Hmm never good if the replacement car doesn't have any redeeming features.

For me I went from a Supra to the CRZ so I got a newer car with modern features (a decent stereo, USB etc), better economy (hybrid y0), running costs (tax, insurance, consumables) and uniqueness!

Which made it worth it in my eyes.

Agreed. Looking back the swap for me was stupid. The Clio was less comfortable, slightly slower, worse on economy, less toys and not as good looking, I guess if it had bettered some of the 330i's features I wouldn't have been that bothered about the power delivery. It only really handled better than the 330i.

I guess if I'd have bought a car more comfortable, more refined, with more toys and better economy than the 330i, but slower, I'd have not wanted to get back into one so quickly!!
