This 'poor spec' 520d has more spec than any car you (or me if you discount the 335i I had for only 3 months) have owned, so if you are a sucker for spec you don't show it

I guess my point really is that its important not to get too hung up on 'spec' being just optional extras. You need to consider whats standard as well and there is an awful lot of standard fit equipment on that car.
A completely base spec 520d ordered today for example, one with 'no spec', will have heated seats, navigation, Xenons...
