Google Pixel 5

Feeling a bit unsure again :D

My reservations now are. Screen quality being worse than my P2 XL. Yes it has higher refresh rate but the DPI is lower.
Speakers, one is under the screen and the other is side firing... I watch youtube on my phone a fair bit.

I'm not in a big rush to get a new phone and don't want to feel like i've compromised, just to save money as i'm happy to pay more to get the features I want.

I'll keep my pre-order and wait for reviews.

BBC News - Google Pixel phone 'designed for economic downturn'
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-54337766

Google's hardware chief has said its new flagship smartphone was designed to go on sale during an economic downturn.

As a result, the Pixel 5 has abandoned some of its predecessor's headline features and runs on a slower chip in order to be sold at a lower price...

..."Its key selling point, however, remains that it offers a stock Android experience with superfast updates."

Having experienced OnePlus, I've got to say it's not much of a key selling point.

It’s unclear if you’re saying you’re not a fan of stock or stock-ish Android. I personally like OxygenOS, though I also like OneUI. I think many Android skins are in a good place (as is iOS).

Apologies, what I meant was that OnePlus do it well enough that the Google version isn't enough to set it apart IMO.

I can tell you now it will be a better screen than the 2xl.

Will the 5 have impaired bokeh compared to the 4, or will it use the ultrawide lens to know what is background and not? IIRC, the multiple lenses on the 4 allowed for actual proper software bokeh that didn't blur into the subject.

I've always thought about the Pixels, even though I have a Note10+, simply because for the price of the Samsung phones the cameras are just hot garbage when it comes to processing.

It's anyone's guess at the moment. Apparently it's more the fact there's two lenses with a distance between them (13mm in the case of the P4) that allows the phone to estimate distance between foreground & background. However, I've not seen specifics that say the effect is better with certain two field of views - so that's what is to be seen.

I wasn't all that impressed with the P4's portrait mode when a subject was wearing glasses.

I have a Note 20 Ultra with a 6.9" screen running at 1080p with 120hz, & i can't tell the difference between 1080p & 1440p the refresh rate on the other hand makes a massive difference.
So the tiny screen on the Pixel 5 :p will be more than fine at 1080p.

I’m fickle as well, been uhming and arring about the purchase myself... :D

However, to address your points - it’s almost unimaginable that the screen will be worse than the 2XL. It may be QHD but it doesn’t really look it, and besides, WAY too much credence is given to silly high resolutions on smartphones. I doubt you would complain about the sharpness on an iPad Pro, and that is only 264 ppi, which is way lower than almost any modern smartphone. Even my monitor is classed as having a decent resolution but is only 109 ppi! The fact that the Pixel 5 screen is a slightly taller aspect ratio, in reality, it’s a smaller screen than the 2XL, so that too will reduce the issue, but in reality, you aren’t going to notice unless you’ve got your nose on the glass. The 90Hz refresh rate will, as said by another poster, be a much bigger difference and will more than make up for it.

Speakers - does anyone care as long as the dialogue is clear? I’m sure it will be. Phone speakers are always going to be poor at best anyway.

For me, its a very first world problem, but it’s the lack of telephoto lens. At this stage, they really should have been offering this, and Super Res Zoom is just not the same as having a dedicated lens. The Ultrawide also doesn’t seem quite as wide as I would have liked. Even though I am an Android man through and through, an Iphone 11 Pro is now a contender as they will be dropping in price soon so will be a similar price, but I’ve tried before and never lasted long. I considered the S20FE but I would prefer a smaller phone, and its even bigger than the 2XL. Nobody seems to make the phone I actually want, but the Pixel 5 does come the closest all things considered.

Please don't buy it, I still haven't recovered from the bi-weekly issues you had with your Pixel 2 as detailed in the thread :p

Feel a bit burned still after the prices dropped on Black Friday when the 3 came out so I'm gonna hold out for a bit and see what deals are about.

Same here. I bought a pixel 2 for 600 on launch then on black friday there were several deals which worked out about £200 cheaper overall. I guess with this launch you get a £200 gift which i think would make up for that buyer remorse if they were to do the same come black friday.
