Google Pixel 5

you want notifications when you're asleep?

No. What I want is - AOD off, silent mode on and no interruptions at all apart from important calls (emergencies). if I check the phone I want to be able to see if I have a text or email etc. That was the case until the recent system update, but now bedtime mode blocks all notifications so I can't even see them if I unlock the phone unless I disable DND. Which is not handy because if I'm checking my phone before I'm fully up and awake i don't want to disable it.

Changing the settings for which notifications show how and when doesn't work. I think it's a bug.

I have dnd on a night and wake up to notifications on my phone so not sure what you've done to change that

Me neither. It was working exactly as I wanted before the latest system update. Now it isn't. I've tried changing the notification display options but even so, it doesn't change the visibility of notications in DND.

Hi All,

Just picked up a Pixel 5 having not owned a Pixel since the 3XL, had everyone before that. At the moment I own a SnapDragon Note 20 Ultra but was getting annoyed with the camera photo quality, colours always off and inconsistent when trying to take pictures of kids etc.

Having decided against the Pixel previously due to the processor Im glad I decided to give it a look, I don't play any high power games on a phone anyway.

Really impressed with the screen, colours are perfectly set. Camera once again is brilliant and beats the Note 20 Ultra on colour accuracy and general clarity, real world there isn't any noticable lag on the Pixel 5 (Note 20 Ultra will load ever so slightly faster but you won't notice in general use).

Speakers aren't great but that's a compromise. What is amazing is everytime I pick up the Note 20 Ultra it now seems massive and really heavy, at first the Pixel felt tiny but then you think it still has a 6" screen is crazy.

Must say, I forgot how nice it is to run vanila Android without additional apps stores, duplicates of apps and lots of unneccessary services. Will carry on testing for the next few days to make sure there is nothing glaring I have missed or bugs that could be a show stopper.

Battery life also seems very good, was also on the Note 20 Ultra with the SD chip so will be interesting to see how they compare.

Going to keep hold of the Note 20 Ultra as Samsung has a habit of improving the camera through updates.

Interesting. I don't think it will be long before I have to replace my 2xl and was looking at the N20U but the price is pretty staggering and for that I'd want close to absolute perfection. The fact that you seem to like the pixel for under half the price makes me once again question the wisdom of a £1k phone!

I do like the pixel UX and it's probably the main reason the P5 still gets a look in for me.

The other thing I thought was I would really like a note 20u but for the premium I'd definitely be wanting the sd865+ model. Then you start to think why not just go for the s20fe 5g at less than half the price... But then I'm reading about touchscreen issues and whatnot.

I'll probably end up with a pixel 5 lol. Especially now that I've looked up this midrange chipset and discovered it's about 50% faster still than my 2xl !

Google downclocked the chip in the P5, so it’s slower than a stock 765. I can’t be bothered digging up the stats but I doubt the version in the P5 is substantially faster than the P2 SoC.

I have the Note 20 Ultra with the 865+, it's very good from a performance and battery perspective, after owning an S20+ with Exynos never again.

The main let down is the camera, the extra £500 doesn't make a huge difference to overall usage and experience. In fact , Samsung's OneUI whilst massively improved is still not as good as the default Android experience. Performance wise the Pixel 5 does all of the things I ask of it without any obvious performance deficits despite have an interior chip.

Question is, have we all been conditioned to think the more expensive phone is automatically better?

Anyway, I own both and will see how oneUI3 improves the Samsung.

Loving the size and the way the Pixel just works

I would have had a Pixel 5 were it not for the cut-price SoC, since it gets so many other things right. As it is, I bought an iPhone 12 and now I’ll likely stick with Apple for a few years, since I got some other Apple hardware at the same time. I thought it a real shame that for all the Android phones out there, an iPhone 12 was the best fit for me.

I know its only one benchmark, and for what it's worth...

Google Pixel 2 XL on geekbench
Single Core: 346
Multi Core: 1380

Google Pixel 5 on geekbench
Single Core: 585 (+69%)
Multi Core: 1590 (+15%)

As far as I am aware, single core performance is more important in day to day usage.

I think the issue most people have with it is the performance relative to an 865/865+ that are being sold today, and yet, I keep reading posts like the below:-

As one of the main drivers behind an upgrade is the improved camera (I really like the look of the telephoto on it), it's disappointing to read the main let down is the camera. There is literally no chance I will spend a fortune on a phone that does not have a top quality camera. The Pixel might be no better, but its also half the price!

Having played with my Note 20 Ultra again last night it is a great phone but they get the basics wrong. It's like having a ferrari but knowing you can ony drive it at 30mph all the time in traffic, whilst it's flash it's costing you loads more money to sit in the same traffic as the guy in the Golf. The traffic picks up and the Ferrari accelerates off more quickly only to catch the traffic queue, the Golf gets there .5 secs later. That's how I would describe the PIxel processor.

There is no doubt the tele lense is good and the ultrawide is better on the Note 20, However the Tele lense is unusable at 50x and looks like water paint. 5 - 10x max but to be honest I've hardly used. The thin I have noticed it taking normal pictures of kids or quick snaps. The Pixel is more pleasing and usually more detailed.

Also, I don't have to deal with all the xtra apps I will never use but cannot remove without ADB, they add them back in anyway after an update. What would be perfect is the Note 20 Ultra hardware with the Pixel software.

As someone who has both it's not worth the extra £500 or so. Definitely not if you are buying the Exynos version. This Note 20 Ultra is still a fantastic device but should be £999 max

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I'll rule that one out. If I did go Samsung then the FE 5G seems to be the way forward but it still lumbered with their software. Although I do see some people saying it's not bad these days and in some ways better than the Google software (browser in particular which is on the play store anyway) but I'm not qualified to comment on that.

Depends what you want, I use Chrome on all my devices so I like consistancy . One UI is a lot better then it used to be but still not as good as the default Pixel Android. You can now disable a lot of apps but there is still a lot of crap you cannot, also only some updates can be downloaded from the Galaxy Store. Just lots of duplication of apps which cannot always be uninstalled (calender, samsung pay, sms client) I use the Google versions.

Lot more options to configure and play with One UI but I still cannot it get it quite right i.e. Screen is to bright or not bright enough (Natural mode is too dull, Vibrant almost burns my retinas out) The pixel nails the screen colours out the box.

The Pixel is by no way perfect, would love the same phone with the 865 and slightly better speakers but then it would cost 750+

After using an S10 for about 18 months, I've grown to like some of the extra features that OneUI brings. Not sure I understand all the hate for it, all this extra "bloat" can just be disabled and/or replaced very quick and easy. Having the 2 separate stores can be a little awkward, but Samsung stuff just auto updates regardless and I download anything new off Play Store, so really it doesn't change anything about the way I actually use the phone.

Having recently got my mrs a Pixel 5 though, it's definitely making me think about switching over when I come to upgrade next year. Mainly just the value proposition, for the things I consider important, battery life and camera. Size is good too, screen is good without being absolutely huge like Samsung's latest offerings. Not keen on the plastic back, I actually kinda like the premium feel of metal and glass, but the Pixel 5 matte plastic is okay.

I think the main software draw of a Pixel for me is actually just the single ecosystem integration. Being able to just use Google services and nothing else would be nice.

Also the note about Samsung browser being better than Chrome I definitely agree with. Also prefer the Samsung Mail app to Gmail, but I persist with Gmail just because it's easier to manage with multiple accounts.
