Google Pixel and Pixel XL

Just quietly "sir doth protest too much". I hope this isn't pre order remorse over compensation. Frankly I just don't want the voice function to override the style and substance of the device, neither or which the Pixels have. They have the resounding stench of blah... In my opinion of course.

"Sir doth protest too much" only works when the person being addressed wasn't answering a direct question.

The problem with the basic Pixel for VR is the resolution, sure the OS has 'daydream support' so the low latency stuff, but the difference between 1080p and 1440p when it's cm's from your face and through a lense is going to be huge...

I've tried a few 1080p phones through Cardboard, an S6 (so 1440p) through Cardboard and an S7 with a Gear VR, even at 1440p you get 'screen door' but it's a whole lot more usable than a 1080p screen which is pretty bad really. I don't see how they could overcome that in any way.

This is what I've been thinking too.

Browsing the net at work and just noticed this on Ars.

A chat with Hiroshi himself.

I read Hiroshi's interview and the bottom line seems to be "business as usual". No OEM seems to have been offended. As I recall the MADA between Google and the OEM is a strong contract. Looking at it another way, in Samsung's case (ie, the OEM with the largest market share- more than twice as large as the second biggest OEM), I think they gave up on any realistic chance to establish a smartphone ecosystem when they signed the MADA in 2014.

Now a design like this would have caught people's attention!

My HTC M9 Vibrate just broke, could upgrade and saw this. £599? Ehhhh

5X is 199 from a highstreet retailer. Probably get that.

Bezel free would work really well,. Look how TV and Movies envision full screen phones of the future, like the one in Black mirror season 3:

Going by current rumours, I have a feeling this is exactly what Samsung and Apple are working toward for 2017. Those two are really the big names now in the smartphones battle. Google is at least trying, though, and even though today reports were that the XL128GB has sold out, no info on how many units were actually produced was made clear, so they could have sold out of just 10,000, for example.

On top of that, this doesn't affect us in the UK, but Google have allowed Verizon to lock down and install bloatware on the Pixel, with a bootloader that cannot be unlocked. ON top of that, Verizon will control OS updates, while Google rollout security patches to them.

To me that kind of behaviour for a device that's supposed to be pure is a big no no.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks" is a quotation from the c. 1600 play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. It has been used as a figure of speech, in various phrasings, to describe someone's overly frequent and vehement attempts to convince others of some matter of which the opposite is true, thereby making themselves appear defensive and insincere.[not verified in body] In rhetorical terms, the phrase can be thought of as indicating an unintentional apophasis—where the speaker who "protests too much" in favor of some assertion puts into others' minds the idea that the assertion is false, something that they may not have considered before.

But whatever right?... He wasn't answering a question as I didn't pose one. I made a statement, he did his best to convince me that I wasn't looking at the bigger picture (one that I had clearly stated that I had no interest in).

Reports out from Reuters that Google, as expected, is spending big on Pixel ads ahead of the 20 October US launch.

In the US, Google has already spent $ 3.2 million on TV ads in two days. Ad execs expect Google to spend hundreds of millions more to keep up with Apple and Samsung.

According to Reuters, "This is the first time they are in the position of selling themselves to people, as opposed to selling themselves to brands," said Rachel Pasqua at MEC Global, a New York-based advertising agency.

Also, "Alphabet Inc's(GOOGL.O) Google declined to discuss how much it will spend advertising the Pixel but Google Vice President of Product Management Mario Queiroz told Reuters it was a "very significant marketing campaign".

He said the tech giant may buy ads during Thanksgiving football games. Such ads can cost around a million dollars, according to a media buyer, who wished to remain anonymous." Verizon, the exclusive operator, is also expected to make a big ad contribution as well.

When I first saw the Google Pixel, and like many of us, there wasn't any getting around the size of those bezels. Though, as time has passed, my eyes must be playing some trickery on me and those bezels seem to have magically reduced in size. :p While the phone won't be receiving 'the most inspirational design awards' any time soon, I must say, I am warming to the Pixel and dare I say it, quite like it. I am deliberating over whether I should order one or not.

As far as Google trying to run parallel with Apple, it would be awesome if we could get to the point where by Google are giving Apple a run for their money. What baffles me though is the way in which Google approaches Android updates. I know direct comparisons can't necessary be made (or can they?) to Apple and how they handle iOS updates given Android runs on a lot of different hardware but surely they can do better than the current situation.

I am currently an iOS user but I am really rooting for Google and hoping they can gain the traction they need to go head to head with Apple.

You are right that fragmentation is an issue for Google "in giving Apple a run for their money". A major factor in the Android Open Source Platform is an OEMs ability to customise the software. Unlike Apple, most Android OEMs operate on very thin margins and have little financial incentive to incur on going expenses after release including system updates. But AOSP has been embraced worldwide and currently Android market share globally is approximately 86% and iOS market share is 12%. Apple makes huge margins on its 12% market share. Google used to launch a Nexus phone with an OEM partner each year but that was always a small, niche product for Google and their approach was to make Nexus a reference for other OEMs to follow. Google added their input to the phone once the Nexus partner had completed 90% of the work.

There have been rumours that Google might take back control of Android and make it a proprietary system like iOS but that would represent a huge change. Could it happen? Perhaps.

Meanwhile, the Pixel stands out as a pure "Google experience" phone as Google has taken complete control of the design and manufacturing end to end. They are currently holding back from Android 7.1 some Pixel exclusive features, such as Google Assistant. They are advertising heavily to create establish the Pixel brand. We now read that they will establish "pop-up" shops in NY and other major cities called "Made by Google". In addition to the Pixel phones, the shops will showcase Daydream VR, Home and WiFi, all made by Google. We have already seen big ads in London.

Pop-up shops could definitely help it see what the in-person experience adds to customer perception of Pixel and beyond.

In London, Google has already developed the concept of store within a store, inside Currys, for example on Tottenham Court Road. A pop-up store would be a natural extension when Pixel launches in the UK. Here is the website behind their first pop-up in NYC.
