Google shows off Android 3.0 - the 'Entirely for Tablet' Honeycomb

I think Honeycomb is being given minimum specs by Google, should be Dual core cpu, capacitive screen. All the budget tablets with resistive screens, slow cpu's and poor battery life are damaging the brand.

I want a tablet, but i'm still not sure when I'd actually use it. I can think of occasional times it might be handy - looking up recipes in the kitchen for example, but in the main I'm already well connected. Smartphone takes care of me out and about. HTPC in the lounge, Laptop for watching movies in bed or browsing, and my main PC with plenty of grunt and dual monitors for gaming and work.

I'll probably pick up a second hand iPad or galaxy tab in a year or two, at around the £100 mark I could justify it (unless I've got my hands on a smartphone/tablet crossover like the Dell Streak)

Me neither. It seems people are trying to invent reasons for buying one.

Ah yes, those countless times when I want to watch a film in bed whilst holding a tablet, rather than watch said film on a 40" TV.

Wait until you are sharing a bed with someone who doesn't want to watch TV or wants to watch rubbish. ;)

I love my Galaxy Tab, unlike a lot of gadgets I buy it's something I use a lot every single day, mainly for reading books, going to websites, watching films and iPlayer, sending mails and lots more. My Desire has basically become redundant because the Tab just does everything so much better and easier.

I'll probably update it for a dual core 7 inch tablet later in the year though. :)

For me it'll be a netbook replacement. Small machine for doing casual things and/or travelling with.

that's a similar reason for me to get one if I ever do. Personally I see netbooks as pointless because they have now become just slightly smaller underpowered notebooks (I'm comparing them to my 13" full fat laptop here). The space saving is so small, however a 10" tablet would save a lot of space and weight when I would be travelling without my laptop. The only issue is I'd want a full fat tablet with a full fat OS to run full fat programs on, so android and iOS just don't cut it. Hopefully windows 8 will have some mean touch advances (amalgamation if Zune and WMC anyone?) so I could still get the easy touch interface of a mobile OS.

I know I'm in the minority though but there are some nice tablets like that coming out. A 10" version of the Eee slate with the ips display and waicom digitizer and pen would be superb.

I bought a 13.3 laptop 2 years ago now for £600 and have used it probably a dozen times. I've given it to the girlfriend.

A tablet is defiantly a luxury item and a bit of fun - my uses will be a for the internet and a little media hub. Something i do not need a keyboard for.

Where the tablet differs to the laptop/netbook is that its more fun to use, runs android so i dont need the bloatware like i'd need on a windows device (antivirus, frewall etc), will turn on and off quickly, nowehere near as bulky, should charge of a micro usb adapter (again no bulky charger), long batterylife, more portable etc

I use mine all the time, be it browsing whilst watching tv, which could be done with a tablet yes, but that's another £500 to spend, or when I'm travelling, or when working. I have a desktop for day to day work, I wouldn't be able to put up with a laptop, especially a 13" one as my main machine but when out its very useful. There are times when I don't need a full blown laptop though, that's where a tablet would come in. A day out or as a backup and basic processing device for my camera, for that android just doesn't cut it, unless of course you can run CS5 with high resolution RAW files on it, or tether a camera to it!

Sometimes a basic tablet would be nice but this is where it goes back to a comment I made in the CES phone thread, syncronisation would have to be a lot better than it is now. Its a pain having to sync two devices together, even with live mesh, 4, with different OSs in the mix would be a nightmare. When we can automatically sync documents, pictures and films between different devices, which will hopefully be soon, then if I had the money id contemplate one.

As a media device to sit in the living room where you chose your film you want to watch or browse tv channels they are going to be excellent (and so far Panasonic, Samsung and Sony are using them for just that).:D

But who doesnt have a TV in there bedroom these days for watching a movie in bed?

and browsing the net/email while watching TV is what smartphones are for.

Nah that's that netbooks are for.

I can't see that much of a place for tablets. Try holding it in bed and typing a messages on facebook - not easy. In fact even using it to watch video isn't easy due to having to hold it up all the time.

A netbook has just as large a screen, is cheaper and free standing on uneven surfaces. Plus more customisable and of course has more apps than android and apple combined.

Looks nice, still need to see realease date and how the mobile windows 7 thing stacks up.

I don't get the whole it does more/looks different from phone. No it does it looks identical, with a few grapgical tweaks as you have a biger screen. Just a way to irrationally diss the ipad. Although flash is very good.

A phone is horrible as a web browser it is to small. Owned several laptops and the form factor is horriable unless you are sat at a desk. Which defeats the point, but that may just be me.

For me a tablet is an ebook reader, web browser in lounge and bed. Watch videos when lodging away for work. Or on a bus/train/plane. Much preffer tablet form factor and the few times i may want to stand it up, you get a bracket or a suitable case

looks good. anyone else cringe when he does something wrong like hitting the wrong button, not hitting anything or when the video chat doesn't load properly?

Lol not just me then.
Does anyone know if the iPad suffers from little niggles like this?

Force closes and freezing does happen, however its rare. Multitasking is still pretty poor with not all apps freezing state properly. After having an ipad for a few months, I've just sold it (love the ability of apple products to maintain value, lost only £20) to possibly get a galaxy tab.

Hope the prices on these things decreases a little so that it becomes almost okay in buying one because seeing them earlier in the week made me moist.

That build used isn't the final retail one, so be patient :)
