Google have joined in to take action.

https://www.google.com/takeaction/

A free and open world depends on a free and open web.

The internet is used by all of us here, and by more than two billion other people who are online too.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is bringing together regulators from around the world to re-negotiate a decades-old communications treaty.

Do you agree with this? Are you backing Google or the Government?

Also, how restricted do you feel the internet should be?

Google

just tried to make my voice heard but get error saying website under maintainance lol

their are applications that allow you to restrict the internet at your own discretion. we dont need the government to do it for us.

just away to control and keep and eye on us.

Google just wants it 'Free' to show you what Google wants you to see... Some freedom of choice eh?

Got this when I tried to sign it:

500 Internal Server Error
The server has either erred or is incapable of performing the requested operation.

Edit: Has it already happened and the whole internets is dead...oh...wait...erm...

I think people should need a license to access the internet. It's a part of the infrastructure just like the roads and you need a license to drive a car.

The license exam should have stuff like building custom linux kernels and subnetting and things like that to keep out the facebook *****. I mean just look at the top videos on youtube, pure mongism.

Almost got me with that, then I saw the username.

How are you even allowed back?

So "Paris Hilton ft. Lil Wayne - Last Night " is your idea of top quality content?

I honestl;y think their should be a license exam. It used to be self-regulating because you'd have to type in text commands to get on the internet, and the web pages where full of useful info, but now anyone can do it and it's full up of paris hilton and link farm spam.

And you had to be rich or have access to it though university. Now you dont even need a keyboard you can record your inane dross on your phone and upload it straight to the net.

Also I think if you hold a valid license in some professional field like you're a doctor or plumber you can be exempt from the exam, so you can use it for legitimate commercial and educational purposes.

No but its other peoples?

So is racism, CP, "cure cancer" quackery, etc.

My idea is not to regulate the content but regulate the content producers through a licensing system. Same way you need a license to broadcast a radio signal or drive on the highway. The license should also cost about £500/year which gives you a static IP registered to your name, with your registration details publicly available to everyone else. That way only educated, qualified, responsible people can produce content.

Think about it, you need a license to have a TV but not internet access??

For me, using the word '****' makes your opinions worth little.

It's not that radical of an idea. Even a Microsoft exec has proposed it.

Or to make it fair to retailers how about read-only access for everyone for £10/year, and write-access for £500/year + competency exam or professional/educational exemption I mentioned above. If you order something from a retailer they just lookup your address from your registered IP address and send it there. That instantly solves fraud too.

Your IP could even be linked to a biometric thing so you just swipe your finger print to place an order, and linked to your credit card. That way no text would have to be submitted by the read-only people.

Google is awesome, in homage I've rewritten an outdated prayer to suit my feelings.

Our Google who art the internet,
Hallowed be thy data,
thy modem come,
thy install will be done,
in my home as it is in Mountain View.
Give us this day our daily data.
And forgive us our uses of Bing,
as we forgive those who troll our Youtube.
And lead us not into massive amounts of weird porn,
but deliver us from /b/.
For thine is the information superhighway,
for the Pbits per second, and the low ping,
forever and ever.
PageBrin

^ Great poem :)

I am a massive believer in the freedom of the internet, but understand the argument for government control.

Its all veeerrry complicated, but I think both sides can have (most) of their cake and eat it. I'll post a full response tomorrow when I have time to articulate.

That's the last we'd see of you then.

Ummm

You need a license to have a TV because the bbc produces most of this countries content and you pay through this license.

Incompetency on the internet is only going to hurt you, unlike driving which can take lives.
You still don't understand the internet though do you? Have you ever heard of VPNs or distributed p2p networks like tor which can make anyone anonymous.
I don't think you would pass this competency test you are talking about.

In short, it doesn't matter how many tests you have, as long as you have some little country not cooperating. You will have trolls who are anonymous.
