The Java goes in your address bar NOT the google search bit

Not for me -

google3.jpg

I'm not giving up.

Lets go again :
1 - Go to www.google.co.uk
2 - Type in the URL
javascript:alert(document.cookie="PREF=ID=fb7740f107311e46:TM=1142683332:LM=1142683332:S=fNSw6ljXTzvL3dWu;path=/;domain=.google.co.uk")
3 - Press ENTER
4 - Nothing really happens
5 - Type in the search engine "overclockers"
6 - The new Google comes up

I get stuck on 3 with error messages on Opera, Firefox and IE.

I'm not giving up.

Oooooh bloody fibbers :
Cut and paste this into the SEARCH ENGINE on Google -

javascript:alert(document.cookie="PREF=ID=fb7740f107311e46:TM=1142683332:LM=1142683332:S=fNSw6ljXTzvL3dWu;path=/;domain=.google.co.uk")

but for the numbers LM=1142683332 make sure there is no gap between the 33 and 32 (for some reason there is a gap above that I can't get out)

Well done ;). VBulletin's inserting the additional space.
Those boxes you're seeing in all 3 browsers are not error messages, they're alert boxes. What you're typing into the URL is a piece of javascript that will pop up an alert box, and set the correct cookie for your machine. That makes the Google magic happen.

What you're typing into the URL

I think we have different meanings for URL.
I always thought the Address Bar and URL were the same thing.
I was typing into the Address Bar where you're typing in the search engine.

"URL" was probably a bad word to use. "URL bar" would be better, which would be the same as "Address bar". We're all typing it into the same box.

However, if you typed your Google search (step 5) in your address bar, it may well not have been taking you to the right Google i.e. you may have set the cookie for .co.uk, but Firefox takes you to .com. I think Firefox is by default set up to send keyword searches from the address bar to google.com.

How can it be so complicated?

I've had the new style running for a few weeks now (it hit the internet headlines at the end of March). Think it's awful, hate it... a step back for Google :(

(

Because people have given an address with spaces in where there shouldn't be any
Others have said you type it in the address bar  where its typed in the search engine

Those are my first roll eyes in 4 years.

Thanks dmpoole.

I think the old layout looked far better though, I hope they don't decide to change it.

Got it working, thanks guys :)

But to the people who dont like it - Why? lol, its pretty much the same you just got a few tables where there wasnt any last time :)

That was probably down to the forum software breaking up the long string. It's not as if these people were trying to mislead others

You're wrong, I'm afraid. All the tutorials say you're supposed to type it into the address bar (not the search box, form input box, text field or anything else). It's possible it works by typing it into the search field (the string is passed through the URL with the variable q, so it may still have an effect), but those who said you're supposed to type it into the address bar were most certainly not fibbing

av. :)

There is a large amount of wasted space on the left under the different links, which fitted in better at the top. Also I just prefer the current layout as i've used Google for as long as i can remember.

1 - We already know that

2 - Pasting that script with the spaces taken out into the Address Bar doesn't work for me in Firefox, Opera and IE. It also doesn't work for a lot of other people. However if you paste that script into the Google Search Engine it works.
