** GORGEOUS NEW LG 4K MONITOR - LG 27GN950-B PRE-ORDER NOW **

Thanks for the recommendation. I think something's wrong with my eyes or I might have gotten a bad unit, because with those settings you recommended it looks like Night Mode is on compared to another 4K monitor I have. I should definitely get a calibration device.

I'll try those settings out as well. The thing is supposed to come 'factory calibrated' though, for whatever that is worth(?).

I change my brightness throughout the day - 100% when it's bright outside and I adjust the room lighting to match so everything is kind of uniform ie I'm so I'm not straining to look at a dark screen when it's glaring around me or vice versa. 0-10% at night - higher for games (which tend to be darker) and lower for 'work' thanks to many apps not having dark modes (looking at you Microsoft).

One oddity I've just started noticing and wondering if anyone else has seen is that after a period of time the screen's colour profile seems to shift for reasons which I haven't pinned down yet. Turning off the monitor and then back on again seems to be the only thing that resolves it! Changing presets, disabling or re-enabling HDR, adjusting brightness or anything else doesn't get it back to normal - only the tried and true 'turn it off, and on again'. The effect is subtle but noticeable; everything just goes a little washed out and some contrast is lost between grays and whites. I don't suppose anyone else has noticed anything similar?

Guys, can i remind you please that no competitor talk is allowed. thank you

try the following, this should be pretty decent although i'd recommend a calibration device so you can hardware calibrate the screen too!

  • Gamer1 mode
  • 8 brightness (for 120 cd/m2) or to taste if you want brighter or darker
  • 70 contrast (default)
  • custom colour temp mode
  • Gamma mode 2
  • RGB = 50, 50, 49 (should be about 6500k then)

Interesting point about a calibrator. I was thinking of that (getting one) but there are reports that LG's software is broken. Does the calibrator rely on the vendor's provided software (LG's broken version in this case) or can you use something else? I'm genuinely curious as it's not an area I've explored much before... also does the fact that these GN950s are supposed to be factory calibrated count for anything?

The hardware calibration issue is fixed in the new firmware released earlier in the week

I like mine at the default settings.

Yeah, pretty much the same here. I use the presets (Game1 or RGB mainly) depending on what I'm doing. I only adjust brightness.

I've been quite happy and impressed so far (slight anomaly as posted in another reply aside). The fact that I'm coming from a TN panel might influence my amazement as the difference is quite stark.

The only question I really have is whether it could benefit from being 'calibrated' or not. Again, it's supposed to be pre-calibrated but it's not a 'pro' grade monitor and doesn't have any certificates etc so I don't know if we just take LG's word on that or...?

Factory calibration will be ok for many people although the calibration criteria are quite lax on this model. Although from my testing the default setup is pretty good in the default gamer1 mode. Just a small tweak to RGB as per my post above will correct slight coolness. The sRGB mode is decent for emulating a smaller colour space but the gamma setup isn’t very good. Note that you def need the latest firmware should you want to use sRGB mode and work with that smaller colour space

So the default setup is prob fine for many people, as long as you are happy with the screen at the target levels they’ve selected. Which most people will be as they are standard and normal targets. But my point about the calibrator was more aimed at someone who said they were struggling to get the screen set up and looking right. It will def help and give you good flexibility for different targets and good accuracy long term as backlights degrade etc. Not necessary really for casual users and gamers perhaps but a great benefit if you’re doing any colour critical work, photo work etc or just want great accuracy

What are your opinions on the RGB cycle that kicks in every time you turn on the display? I’ve read it’s very annoying and there’s no possible way to disable it.
Don’t turn the display off, just let it go to sleep when your pc is off and it doesn’t then need to cycle on :) not sure why you’d ever need to turn the power of the screen off tbh

Hasn't bothered me so far - maybe give it another year or two :D

Old habits probably. That was a thing once upon a time. I actually still turn it off at night... not sure if that's necessary come to think of it. Someone will probably have an answer :)

Awesome, thanks for the response, appreciate it :)

I'm not doing any colour work (at the moment) so am quite happy for the time being. I am a bit of an obsessive perfectionist though so am still interested in the fact that it could be 'tweaked' with a calibrator since as you say their criteria is 'quite lax'. Will have to ponder on whether I want to spend such money just to scratch an itch...

Sorry, me again! Incidentally, I don't suppose you saw my earlier question (when replying to someone else's post) about colour shifting and only being able to resolve it by turning off and on again (which might explain my penchant for still turning things off over night lol)...?

Yeah that’s weird. I would turn local dimming off probably and also smart energy saver. Could be one of those causing it. Apart from that have you updated to new firmware using OnScreen software?
