Got me a new car

I love these threads.

* Somebody posts pics of their new car that they're obviously very happy with.
* 2 mins later somebody asks "how much?"
* Everybody posts about how you could've got it cheaper if it had 100k more miles, or how you could've saved £500 by buying privately or how you could've bought a Mondeo/BMW/Focus/blah blah for the same money (delete as appropriate)
* Thread goes on for 5 pages until the OP gets sick and doesn't bother coming back.

I just don't get why people give a stuff how much he paid for it, or what other car he could've got for the same price. It's *his* money so he can do what the hell he likes with it. Here's an off the wall suggestion, perhaps he likes the Golf TDI? Maybe he doesn't want one with 115k on the clock. Just perhaps he doesn't like the shape of the Focus or a BMW is too big for his requirements.

Maybe, just maybe the Golf is the perfect car for *his* needs and he's very happy with it.

Sometimes people want a particular car cos they like that car. They're aware that it might be a bit more expensive than the Ford equivalent or isn't as reliable as its Japanese equivalent. They just want it cos it's the car that *they* like.

Not everybody wants the most sensible choice or best value for money. We've all got our own criteria when it comes to buying a car and that doesn't always mean getting the absolute best car available on paper for your money. If it did then nobody would ever buy an Alfa Romeo, Fiat wouldn't exist and SAAB would've been bankrupt a long time ago.

I've certainly not suggested he should have bought anything other than a Golf, eidolon.

Just that it was a ridiculous amount of money for an 03 plate TDI 130. He could have got a newer or more powerful Golf instead. I've suggested no BMW's and recommended no 100k mile cars.

What did you expect from this thread? 15 replies saying 'Wow, what an awesome car'? This thread was ALWAYS going this way especially with the comical revalation that the local dealer searched for this particular car for him for no less than ONE YEAR!

Come on dude - it was DOUBLE what you paid for yours, looks identical and is only 3 years newer.

no one's slagging him for buying a golf tdi, well actually that's a lie, but they shouldn't be :p
it's just that he's been conned. it's over priced

what eidolon said lol

i wasnt expecting a Wow what an amazing car you have post (after all im posting pics of a plain and standard Golf MK4!!

guess i shouldnt have bothered posting, apologies for wasting everyones time! was just hoping to get some friendly replies

I think really you have to take this on the chin, appreciate the suggestions that have been made and move on.

The key is, as long as your happy, thats fair enough. I bought a car once that was overpriced a bit, i loved it at the time and couldnt give a sh!t about what anyone thought.

This put me in good stead for the next car i bought, i made sure i got a good deal and it ticked all the right boxes. I learned a bit from my previous buy.

Good luck with the new motor though and its definately better than you previous car. ;)

Its a forum thats open to post whatever reply you want, not whats going to make the poster feel the best about his purchase. End of the day you paid too much for your car and the story about waiting a year while the dealer found you one is just.....well its funny for something as common as a TDI Golf, it all stinks of you getting "schoolied" by the dealer.

Yes we have been harsh. But thats the way of the internet lol. To be honest after this "welcome" Everything settles down people get to know you abit and then its actually a really cool place to post and learn things :)

What made you grow up then? as you said :). going from a modded 307 to a mk4 golf TDI is abit of a step. :)

unless you intend on looking for a new car, whats the point? why waste your time? Noticed you driven a lot of cars just for the hell of it? obviously nothing better to do.

LOL @ This

Driving multiple new cars that belong to other people that you could never afford or insure for absolutely free? Correct me if im wrong, but that sounds like a rather good hobby!

Get back under your bridge...

There is a plus side. That Golf is a VAST improvement over your 307, well done!

For all you know I could be a car salesman. I could be a dealership owner, or a collector of cars. I could own 5 or 6 cars, or even be part of a driving club. The simple fact is you dont know who i am, i dont know who you are, and quite frankly, i dont care. your reasoning is simply flawed.

Test driving cars provides you with education and experience, and with this you are able to make well informed decisions. Why test all the cars you may want to buy when you want to change, rather than racking up a few years of test drives in many tens of cars to have a very clear picture at the point you desire a new one.

Id much rather have someone like Fox giving me advice on cars due to his opinions being based upon real life experience than taking the advice of people who base there opinions on their own thoughts alone.

I think hittmans anger is spawned from his own inability to be able to test drive multiple other cars. or the fact hes to scared to try.

I have read the thread thanks, my comment still stands.

*takes applause* ;)

In that case, applause from me too. I admire your maturity and lack of constructive reply. ;)

I don't care what you occupation is. If you can provide an constructive reply then its fine. I am not disputing the fact test drives provides good education and experience, which is obvious! What I am saying is, I find it pointless and sad, people who "blag" test drives at dealerships who have no income to purchase or the intentions of buying X or Z car. Do you now understand? If you have followed the thread carefully from the start you would have understood my view point.

So return to the hole or bridge. thanks

Test driven influenced handy hint for the day: When chosing a new company car, make sure the Mk4 Mondeo is above the new Laguna in your list.

There's only one person showing their sign of maturity here, or lack of it.

Constructive reply to what exactly? I called you a troll, for doing exactly that...trolling.

It seems to me that you ridicule everyone in this thread who like to gain an education and opinion on cars, by test driving them. This will allow us to make an easier decision on what or where to buy next or service. Yet this doesn't seem to be acceptable to you, and this is after all the motors forum.

I don't know who you think you are impressing with your baseless sarcastic remarks, because you just seem to be digging deeper, deeper and deeper.

Have fun.

The thing is, and I do often mention this, I don't actively dislike the Golf. There is nothing inherently wrong with the Golf, infact there is much thats right with it - it's better built than a Focus, modified ones have the potential to look quite nice and whilst the PD engines are rattly, noisy and unrefined they've at least got a turn of speed about them.

It's just unfortunate that in any Golf thread these goodpoints are almost always overshadowed by the absolutely ridiculous cost of the car in the first place. It suddenly doesn't matter that the Golf is better built than the Focus when it cost so much more than the Focus in the first place that you could probably get an Audi A4 on the same plate for less!

A Focus would also out handle a Golf all day long...

OP, can I get some of the drugs you're on?

Nah you did pay over the odds to be fair bit but hey live and learn . I'm sure you'll enjoy the car either way :)
