Government is talking about upping car tax upto £140 this year

£255 for my sub 100 bhp 1.4 petrol that used to cost £125 when it was new. It is old admittedly but that is over a doubling of car Tax.

Too many cars on the road, it's a no brainer really. But compared with insurance and fuel costs it is nominal. I think that currently there is a flat rate of £160+ for all cars newer than a certain date but below £40k new retail price. Whatever the emissions.

No change for me, still 35 quid for my Avensis diesel.

Van probably going up but it'll be sold by then.

Tbh there's a very good chance the tories will kick this down the road anyway, not good in election year when they're pretending to be fighting against their made up war on motorists.

Mines going from £180 to £190 which is what they do every year it goes up about £10.

Anything above band G though at this rate in about 6 years I'll be paying this if I still have the car and especially bands J-M... WTF.

My old boring diesel is staying cheap.

Another reason to keep it going, the idea of a new car is great but the costs are insane considering I pay next to nothing for my climate killing 10yr old diesel.

Just looked at the article, a complete lie for a headline.

The article goes on to say it will increase by RPI.

Have people not worked out these headlines?

"This one trick will save you £1000 on car insurance"

"UK drivers unaware they will be fined £2,000"

"UK to see 2 feet of snow in freak weather in August"

It would have been so much easier if they just abolished car tax and stuck a few p more on fuel duty. I guess it’s here to stay so the government can easily start taxing all the electric cars once uptake increases.

At times when people are already feeling the pinch, they could have paused it for this year or increazed by less than inflation.

I suppose they do have to cover the £37bn they stole from us during COVID and the damage caused by Truss somehow.

yes it's crap - they could have just printed old and new values and the delta increases -
I couldn't see any credible news source that had also reported this leak, who might have presented data correctly, futher de-legitimizing leak.
even if their goal is demonizing the Tory party - haven't seen if Kier is motorist friendly.

There may be too many cars on the road, but I can just see this increasing the number of uninsured or untaxed cars on the road.

Survived a slight increase on band G, phew!
Up to £255 from £240 for the likes of us I think. Better than a £140 increase like the title made it sound!

I wish our car had lower emissions but can't really afford anything newer at the moment, and it's still in quite good condition too.
