Government is talking about upping car tax upto £140 this year

At times when people are already feeling the pinch, they could have paused it for this year or increazed by less than inflation.

The forecasts published at the autumn statement is contingent on all the ‘fixed rate’ (E.g. those with a fixed £ and P amount) taxes that are meant to automatically rise with inflation (such as fuel duty and VED) actually rising with inflation and those that aren’t meant to automatically rise (such as the income tax personal allowance) staying put.

If those things don’t happen, then those forecasts are effectively pointless.

Don’t worry, motorists are not the only ones being hit in the pocket, rail fares are also going up 4.9%. A standard class season ticket from Ipswich to London, a journey which only takes 1hr 15 mins, will rise from £7,832 to a cool £8,215. Now that is daylight robbery.

yes it's crap - they could have just printed old and new values and the delta increases -
I couldn't see any credible news source that had also reported this leak, who might have presented data correctly, futher de-legitimizing leak.
even if their goal is demonizing the Tory party - haven't seen if Kier is motorist friendly.
It's not really a leak is it, it's on the government website for everyone to see.

Too many cars on the road, it's a no brainer really. But compared with insurance and fuel costs it is nominal. I think that currently there is a flat rate of £160+ for all cars newer than a certain date but below £40k new retail price. Whatever the emissions.
What does "too many cars on road" have to do with increasing road tax?

OP is brave linking to an Express article.

Who really cares in all honestly, VED is such a small part of the cost of ownership of a vehicle, fuel duty/fuel, servicing, repairs, depreciation, insurance etc. what % is VED of that in a normal year?
Depends on car & usage. On my ST220 the VED is the largest single cost of ownership so overall it's a decent chunk of the cost, especially with the low mileage I do in it.

It's not about the £, it's about the principle of adding yet more "stealth taxes" on the motorist

if the Gov needs for tax intake... why not raise income tax?

Like, i really want to get a "cleaner" car, I really do want to save the planet...

But they are just making it so cheap to keep driving the old climate denying, Greta murdering diesel..

It's really not my fault anymore. They keep on punishing people with new cars.

Mines going from £180 to £190 which is what they do every year it goes up about £10.

Anything above band G though at this rate in about 6 years I'll be paying this if I still have the car and especially bands J-M... WTF.

I thought the bands only applied to vehicles registered prior to 1/4/17 and everything after is the two flat rates.
