GPU prices go boom

Yup, afaic, it is the final nail in the coffin for PC gaming, a number of PC gamers have already been jumping ship to the consoles over the last 1-3 years (even more so since the ps 4 pro and xb1x) due to various things but mainly the price hikes. Now, well, I can just imagine even more doing the same. This is exactly why I haven't bothered spending any money on my gaming PC for years now, just not worth it in my eyes.

I'm just waiting for a good bundle deal on the ps 4 pro, hopefully there will be some good ones this year with spiderman amongst a few other exclusive titles.

Lets hope for the retailers sake that this mining bubble doesn't burst in a year or 2, otherwise they will be left with a lot of overpriced cards and very little to no gamers to buy them. I think AMD/nvidia knew themselves that PC gaming was on the decline (as well as being no were near as profitable as potential other markets) hence why they have been branching out to all other markets especially the car market now.

Also when developers/publishers start to see the PC version sales dropping, they will put even less time into the PC port i.e. expect graphics to be exactly the same as consoles and expect even more bugs and worse performance and who knows, if the lack of sales get to a certain point, they might not even bother releasing for the PC platform.

Even when vega 56/64 was £380/460, it was still a rip off, should have been no more than £350/400 at most

If crypto is still driving GPU card prices up by the time the next wave of consoles launch then I can see a lot of people jumping out of PC gaming. There just aren't enough gains to be made over a console with a PC without spending £1000 or more.

This. My PC is in the living room connected to my new 4k tv which is the main thing driving the desire to upgrade - The 6950 cant even output 4k resolution for 2d :D. However once I actually looked at the PC games market there's barely a game I'm desperate to play - The PC killer app has all but disappeared.

I'm not paying £800 to play prettier 4k versions of Fifa18 and Forza 7.

Been watching the forums with people asking if they should upgrade or not and waiting and waiting. Looks like they will be waiting a very long time now.

Volta is even better for mining then current Nvidia generation so looks like sever shortage will be a thing.

Problem its not just Bitcoin mining - theirs lots of different Coins Type now.

.
Its not really BTC mining at all, as thats not done with gfx cards, its the ALT coins which are driving this current boom, ETH is a big boom at the moment. People are making a lot of money.

From working in the industry the current swathes of people moving from consoles to PC gaming is bigger than ever, the gfx prices may slow this down, but many moving from consoles plump for gtx 1050ti and the none mining end of the gfx market.

How do Nvidia expect to sell their 120hz 4k displays when the only cards that run it are in the hands of miners or priced too high for gamers? :P

Which industry would that be ?

I think someone who can afford one of those 65" screens (I say they will be around $5000) will be able to afford the cards needed regardless

I think maybe as PC gamers we are all looking to get to the top end all of the time.

People jumping from console to PC are perhaps looking to go from 1080p 30Hz gaming to 1080p 60Hz so the jump is maybe £300 more than a console when brand new. Over the life of the PC and the savings made on games, if you buy a lot, then it might make sense.

Once you start chasing even higher resolutions and VR then it becomes a money pit.

Likewise, I went with an oled tv (largely due to **** monitor market [rip off prices, poor QC, no progress, same old basic crap LCD] and refusing to lock myself into free or g sync) so the desire to want to upgrade the GPU is there but at the same time, I'm not spending £500+ when there aren't any must have games especially when the games look more or less the same on the console and in some cases, performance is pretty much the same @ 4k....

I'll probably pick up a 1050(ti) to upgrade my 290 at some point, won't be much, if anything in it for game performance but it will be able to play hevc and 4k content much better via madvr than my 290 as well as having full HDR support.

Probably be people just buying those entry level cards to play the free to play/indie and RPG games as well as using it for a HTPC (1050/ti is the best card for this)

As shown from market data, all the PC gaming profit comes from the likes of LOL, overwatch, CS:GO, guild wars where as consoles are where the triple A title money is at.

I think someone who can afford one of those 65" screens (I say they will be around $5000) will be able to afford the cards needed regardless

I think many people here are able to afford the hardware (well maybe not the likes of the titan V anyway! :D) but the problem that many have, at least for myself anyway, is justifying the purchase. The PC just doesn't have the same graphics lead it used to over consoles and with the poor optimisation in so many titles, performance isn't as good as what it use to be either in a lot of titles.

With games like batman arkham knight, assassins creed origins etc. I just don't see the point of paying £500+ when a console will do the job just as well, if not better..... And then look at some of the titles that the ps 4 pro get i.e. HZD, last of us, it beats anything the PC has i.e. digital foundry even gave HZD the number 1 spot for technical achievement of 2017.....

I was going to make the move to 1440 this chrismas, which meant a complete system and monitor upgrade ... But am sticking with my [email protected] and 390. So for me GPU pricing has affected me buying a cpu,mb,memory, gpu and monitor..

I'm building a mining rig at the moment and was talking to a guy I buy parts from today, people are buying batches of cards & motherboards the moment they're confirmed to be in the UK, 400 ASROCK 12-card BTC's came in this week, all sold before they were taken off the pallet.

In terms of BTC there are some very big players in the industry which speculate £50k per coin this year, wouldn't surprise me at all ;)
The problem with Bitcoin is that it has basically 0 use. It consumes vast quantities of energy and has high fees and long transaction times. This information is gradually becoming more widely known as people like Microsoft stop accepting it as payment. Once the speculation bubble has burst what will be left?

There are new coins appearing that solve all of these problems and have more potential for growth. £50k seems insane to me given the circumstances but then I thought it was overpriced at $1000 so what do I know :)

I've been a PC gamer all my life and I'm not going to stop now, this is just a temporary blip like all the others. 'PC gaming is domed!' as they used to say! I genuinely hate the console experience with long load times and all the other crap that you get no choice over. I'd also miss the variety of games on the PC, the sort of games that sell consoles have little interest to me.

(also I'm a PC game dev currently :) )

It looks like we're all stuck waiting for reasonably priced mid-range cards to get powerful enough to warrant upgrades from our current cards (stuck on R290 here). There's no way I'm paying £900 for an air-cooled Vega, because I'm not a crazy person.

I was hoping you be a fellow Game dev, well ex dev for me lo

From the game dev side of thing i've no idea, I just see the gaming PC volumes going crazy and speaking to customers a huge amount are moving from consoles to play the likes of PUBG, Dayz various mods, arma mods, fortnight etc

Along with cheaper games on Steam, and better online experience.
