GPU prices go boom

The two are not mutually exclusive. I have a gaming PC, as well as PS4 and XBone.
"I don't have money for this and that - I have to choose one."
"Why don't you have both? They aren't mutually exclusive!"

:p

Obviously, but thread is about prices going up, and affordability going down (for some of us...)

Personally I'd wait for the new **70 line to be announced and make an order as *soon* as it's up on pre-order. Sorted then with 1080+ performance for not too much money (hopefully!). You may have to wait a little because of the (manic) miners but a few weeks at most.

Just make that 970 last just a bit longer imo.
xx70 line won't be available until Q4 most likely. I'd bet my unwashed, holy socks on it.

A fair point, well made. To be honest, if I had nothing right now I probably wouldn't stump up the necessary readies for a gaming PC. I'd settle for an Xbox / PS4 and a laptop.

Yah sadly it's Crypto-mining is driving up the costs and supply I'm very certain.. I was in Microcenter yesterday and they had gotten a shipment of video cards in stock. I stuck around for about an hour and all of them sold out within an hour of opening!! It was kind of nuts!

I saw this one guy who I talked with for a few minutes buying 10 video cards, I think I counted 4 GTX1060s, 3 GTX1070s, 2 GTX1070Tis and a GTX1080!! He told me he was building 2 mining computers. I also asked if he had ever done any gaming. He said he hadn't done any type of computer or videos games since the original NES when he was in high school. Yah so you have people buying cards now who NEVER were in the gaming market before. And they are not buying just one or two cards...

The rest of the faster cards were bought up as well.. most people buying 2-3 at a time too!! I wouldn't be surprised if people using those for mining too or people just trying to resell them.

Yeah, crazy but not hard to believe. Last year some shops over here in Finland told they have got Russian guys coming in to buy all suitable video cards they could find on the shelves. That is, these Russians applied for a visa, travelled hundreds of kilometers (or more) to visit an EU country, only to buy video cards from random computer stores. Pretty sure they weren't gamers, haha.

After selling some guff on ebay I had a roam around the used PC parts sections and was even more shocked than I was a few weeks ago. People moan about RAM prices but the price of graphics cards is almost beyond insane! Even broken 1080ti's are going for mad cash.

It's not often I get on the train before it's left the station, but I'm glad I grabbed my 1080 Strix and didn't "wait for Vega", only to get screwed by all this! PC gamers are in a bad place.

Indeed, the increase in new prices is having a major impact on 2nd hand prices too. I've seen 1070's going for about £350 second hand! unbelievable! The 970's replacement is going for more second hand than it's predecessor went for new!

looks like all cryptos are down around 20% today, hopefully an extra 20-30% should bring gpu prices down a bit.
" Bitcoin's fall was part of a broader crypto-currency selloff. Every major cryptocurrency has suffered double-digit losses over the last 24 hours, according to CoinMarketCap. Ethereum is down 21 percent. Bitcoin Cash is down 25 percent. Litecoin is down 20 percent, while Dash is down 21 percent, and Monero is down 25 percent."
