Hello,
The riser arrived.
I plugged the riser in with my existing card to test the setup - worked ok.
Plugged the 390x in - my goodness it needed a lot of power connections! - and...
Nothing happened. No fans, no output. Just dead, lol.

So time to pursue the RMA case.

Anyone else surprised?

How can you pursue an RMA case when you were not the original purchaser and more to the point bought it as parts?

You my friend have spent 50 quid on an expensive paper weight.

No of course not. There's nothing of value in it if it doesn't work.

I bought 3 working ones of these on the members market for like £45 to £55 a pop. One was a His 7970 ghz that I flashed to 280x, the other was a 280x gaming, can't remember what one the last one was. If your handy you can strip it down and have a look at the card for any damage. If it's a vrm or anything then it's game over but other than that it can probably be fixed, still not worth the time but as a project and if your into soldering and electronics it could be fun.

Edit: just read its a 390x probably not a terrible shout at 50 untested. I would want to try it in the actual slot rather than a riser tbh, I have had cards that simply don't work in certain boards/risers. Recently put a RX470 in a machine and for some reason all sound on the motherboard nuked itself, the end solution was buy a soundcard so even today we do see compatibility issues.

Yes, most definitely. Make sure you have enough room at home for the free unicorns they send with RMAs of this type won't you...

this image was taken for my sale post at the time hence the angle, but this is the intel build i mentioned i had with a case similar style to yours, that is a msi twin fan gtx 750, probably about as long as a 660 twinfrozr i originally had and while this was a bit more of a pig, i was able to fit it with my drives/cables intact from just various angling, obviously your graphics card is longer, so you would have to take the hdd out and move some cables.

just to add to other posters, there are many reason you might not get a display:

1. the gpu is dead
2. one of the inputs dont work
3. needs thermal paste
4. auxiliary cables not plugged in
5. power supply not upto the job
6. compatibility issues

this is based round the gpu itself, the seller(generalizing) might not have the required monitor/cables for the inputs, the computer it was tested in might have bad ram, nobody is exactly going to tell you details of their testings if they even did any.

Take the cooler off, stick it in the oven on a foil covered baking tray suspended by some tinfoil balls on the corners of the pcb, bake at 240*C for 5 - 10 minutes, remove from oven, allow to cool, re-attach cooler, re-test.

I revived a few 8800GTS' 9800GT's etc with that method back in the day... :p

Poor man’s reflow can sometimes do it. Or if you know someone in manufacturing, ask to chuck it in their reflow oven.

Why is this thread still alive ?
This quite literally the saddest thing I've seen.

*Sees a BMW on sale for £400*
*Listed as parts or repairs*
*Goes ahead with purchase*

Don't understand the expectation to RMA an ebay purchase? Surely pretty much any manufacturer wants original invoice receipt for RMA? I'm guessing an ebay receipt for the purchase of a known not working card is not going to cut the mustard...

Odd decision to but a card on this basis with obviously little IT experience given the reluctance to remove the motherboard for gfx card testing...

Sorry dude...50 quid wasted..
