What's why I always keep my troops active (even more so when I'm asleep). If you use scouts, you can make sure you never send your attack force to their deaths. If I'm picking my fights and my army is hardly ever at my village, I can build up a heathly army without fear of it getting butchered. There isn't a village in my area which could send a reasonable attack force to me so I only have to worry about villages far away. If that's the case, I have loads of prior warning to get my troops out the village and spend my resources
It's certainly a risky venture but if you're active, I believe it pays off. It's all or nothing though.
Goose - Assuming you get a report of his troop numbers when his does attack (I'm not entirely sure about this, I've only been attacked one and I had scouts at my village then), I would personally:
-wait til the last 30 seconds
- send your troops to any enemy village
- once the attack is over, quickly cancel your attack on the enemy village
- Check out the report. If he has a large army, keep your army active and your resources low
- If he only has a few (unlikely with a pop like that), simulate the battle and if you win, GO 'AV 'IM!!!
