Seeing as we had a thread for awful covers, i thought it best to do one for covers you think are really, really good :)

I'll start it off with an awesome cover that i've heard (yes, awesome) which is Susanna and the Magical Orchestra's cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. It's bloomin' marvellous! :D

Be interesting to see if anybody changes their mind from this thread : http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17614393&highlight=cover

Mine is the same -
Judas Priest - The Green Manalishi by Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac.

Slayer - In the Garden Of Eden (In a Gadda Da Vida) by Iron Butterfly
Also if there was proper rock vocals on it, Ten Masked Mens version of Livin La Vida Loca would get a mention.

Lily allen on R1 live lounge - Naive (kooks)

Terrible song, she makes it bearable. A commendable effort.

The actual best is jimi's all along the watchtower, so I'll echo that.

[...] Fear Factory - Cars [...]
No no and thrice no!

Even though I'm partial to a bit of FF every now again, it's patently obvious that whenever they do a cover, all they do is get all Stars In Their Eyes and try and mimic the original as closely as possible with guitars.

And I'm not just talking about Cars, either; both 0-0 [Where Evil Dwells] - which they make a decent fist of, to be fair - and Dogday Sunrise reverently stick to the originals like glue. That's not good covering in my book, but their versions sound effective simply because of the strength of the originals.

And I will told off for this one as well: the Roxy Music version of "Jealous Guy" - the Lennon original is a boring dirge. Like most of his solo stuff though, to be fair.

Oasis - C'mon Feel the Noize
When a similar thread came up a few years ago I got a bit of stick for that (due to love of the original), but I think as a track it really suits Oasis' style. I shan't even bother mentioning Heroes :) Was the business was the played it live on TOTP instead of the A-side (the criminally overrated "Don't look back in anger")

The Source - Ready or Not
For some reason their cover of "You Got the Love" by Candi Staton is more popular, which isn't a patch on the original. Unlike this little Fugees number which is a genuine improvement.

Me first and the gimme gimmes - all their songs (since they're a cover band)

Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats

And i also love Lostprophets - Cry me a river. and Going underground for a laugh :)

edit : i'd like to add another one (or two)
spunge - no woman no cry
starting line - nothings gona stop us now

Y'know what? I was all set to agree with you [I'm always up for a bit of Lennon pedestal-toppling], and I thought I'd better listen to them both again before posting.

Good job I did, because the Lennon original is superior to Roxy Music's power-ballad by numbers interpretation.

Damn, I hate it when I have to eat some crow, especially when it involves the Beatles.
