Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [11th - 15th February 2023]

I've gotta say with all the hate over this VAR decision in the Arsenal match, let's not forget the goal was awarded in the first place. It's not like the goal was flagged offside, they look at the replays and say "nah that was onside mate". It can take a bit of getting your head round but I like to think of VAR as NOT being about making the correct decision, it's about quickly identifying scenarios where an obvious mistake has been made by the onfield officials (i.e. even if it is probably they made a mistake, if there is any doubt, then the decision stands). In the majority of cases, including this one, that should be the same thing, but it's a kind of subtlety that's sometimes overlooked. I've seen numerous more blatantly wrong decisions over the years, people have gotta accept that even with VAR it's still not going to be perfect when we are talking close calls and they have to make a decision without holding up the match too much (unlike TV analysis an hour or more later). It's the really bad decisions that grate me, a day after the Brentford match I'm less sore about that decision than I am more than 15 years after the Eto'o "goal".
