Has that been changed since the VVD incident or was it just a classic case of making a massive balls up on the part of the ref.
Massive balls up by VAR. They got caught up with the offside decision and never bothered to check whether it was a red card. In the same game Richarlison was sent off for a studs up challenge on Thiago after the ref had blown his whistle for a foul. Violent conduct and serious foul play are still offences, regardless of whether there's been a stoppage (retrospective or not) prior to them.

It's only cards for cynical challenges and or denying goal scoring opportunities that are rescinded if there was a foul or offside in the build-up to the attack.
