I thought it was widely accepted that when referring to a ‘product of our academy’ it referred to home grown talents, rather than bought in? If not I stand corrected.

I wasnt agreeing with you, i think its absolutely nonsense to suggest hes a product of your academy the same way i think its nonsense to say Elliott was of Liverpools.

He does qualify as home grown (or will do once he's been here 3 years)

Product of academy literally means qualified from the academy. Doesn't matter if he was there 2 years or 10.

While this may be technically true, there must be some sort of threshold where you can make that claim in the context of adam's original post that started this debate.

I have no idea if 2 years is enough but omnom mentioned Elliott, technically he's from Liverpool's academy however I doubt he spent more than a few months with the academy before he was part of our first team set-up. It would be more than a bit misleading for anybody to say Elliott was a product of Liverpool's academy - he was signed as a youngster, already at the required level to be on the fringes of our first team squad.
 
Well I would have thought the minimum requirement is a year given that they induct each year into the academy and graduate them at the end. Given Eliott made his debut 2 months after he signed I wouldn't say he qualifies. I wouldn't say someone like Amad qualifies because he hasn't really played for our academy, just a couple of reserve games and then on loan.
 
Some true academy top 6 players I can think of are

Foden
Saka
Esr
Mount
Gallagher
McTom
Rashford
Garnacho?
Kane

Im sure there’s loads more
