Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 18th May 2023]

I get why people are going to say Arsenal bottled it given the last few weeks but it was nothing to do with bottle, they just were never as good as their early season form suggested.

I don't mean it as a dig nor am I suggesting they were lucky but everything that could go Arsenal's way in the first 3/4's of the season went their way. Every player performed to their absolute peak and whenever they dipped a little bit, they just found a way to scrape a win. It wasn't sustainable though and a number of players have dropped back to their normal level.
this I also the reason why I dont think Newcastle have bottled top4, when we finish 5th. To finish 5th with the squad we have is an unbelievable season, players all season have been playing way above their levels and in recent weeks have dropped back to where we expected to be.

I think about what difference the break for the WC made as we had a lot of momentum at that point when things stopped, but really it would have ended the same way: a squad not complete or durable enough for 38 games against City, no run-in experience, having to perform miracles to win a few games in a manner that wasn’t sustainable… I do think we’ll be better next year though and have drunk the ‘we’re in phase 3 of 5’ Kool-Aid. I don’t think that will be good enough to finish on 99 points or something like that though.

Woppy, you've got to drop points at least twice in 3 games and Liverpool have to win their remaining 3. I admire your desire to allow Liverpool into the CL but sadly it's highly unlikely to happen.

You’re still third, nobody is talking about Newcastle bottling anything lmao.

The way you’re going on is all kinds of weird.

Sorry for being so shirty guys, it’s just a horrible feeling when you know it’s all over after such a long season where you nearly get everything right and still end up with nothing.

At least I can relax now and concentrate on the top 4/relegation battle. Tbh, I don’t know what would be worse, losing it now, or by a point or so on the final day. I suppose Liverpool fans can tell me.

It's going to be nail biting for us both, but I think your boys have an easier run and your boys are also used to the pressure (playing in finals , winning the league etc), which a lot of our players simply aren't used to.

Come back when you actually get into the position where you can bottle a title win

I have seen it happen twice in my lifetime. It is even worse knowing City basically cheated their way to the first title as well. If we drop out of champions league positions this season we will equally be bottlers as will Newcastle if they let Liverpool back in but to be 50 points at mid point to not win the league is mighty impressive. Arsenal will not get stronger next season. Other teams will build and they will go back to fighting for top 6. Just ask Spurs fans from 15-17. The chance to win a league doesn't come around often. Especially with City now. Spurs will be lucky to get top half if Kane leaves in the summer. Their fans will be waiting another couple of decades.

What is it with football fans, you're all so bloody pessimistic! Give me Adam in one of his madly optimistic moods over all this negativity any day. You're beating Leicester and given Brighton's schedule, I can't imagine how you don't win at least one of Brighton at home and Chelsea away.

I forgive you, it's the hope that gets you!

If someone told you you'd stroll into 2nd place at the start of the season, you'd have bitten their hand off I imagine. The team/manager has done well across the season, but the draws against West Ham and Southampton have done you dirty.

I'd prefer to be made happy than crushed by hope :p

But let's be clear - I think we've had a wonderful season, I've never once hated watching a match - unlike the previous 3-4 years. I'll still be happy with 5th, but over the freaking moon with 4th or 3rd.

its been weird this season and i haven’t been that upset when we have actually lost because it hasn‘t that often. I’m still in aww of how we have performed this season TBH. But I have always been a pessimist
