Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 18th May 2023]

Brighton manager has to win manager of the year. Done amazing.

He's in with a good shout, but I think Emery and Howe have to be in the shortlist as well when you look at what they've done.

De Zerbi has done wonders to the team, he took a very well drilled side and gave them the cutting edge that was missing for the last couple of seasons. I hope Bloom backs him with whatever he wants, within reason, over the summer as it'd be a shame to see him leave anytime soon.

Think they will be fine, even if they lose some of their better players in the summer they seem to be finding great players for little money that others are missing

Think the best signing from Brighton would be whoever is finding these players

Sorry for being so shirty guys, it’s just a horrible feeling when you know it’s all over after such a long season where you nearly get everything right and still end up with nothing.

At least I can relax now and concentrate on the top 4/relegation battle. Tbh, I don’t know what would be worse, losing it now, or by a point or so on the final day. I suppose Liverpool fans can tell me.

I’m a bit sanguine about it. After 38 games we‘ll have come up firmly short rather than agonisingly close and the latter scenario was always unrealistic with the gulf in squad quality (I predicted on here before the WC we’d run out of steam towards the end). We’ve never managed more than 90 points before with the most dominant team we had, so the idea of the same team that got 69 points last year + a couple of signings instantly getting… I’m going to say 95 points because City look good for 94 this year, maybe 92 at worst, was always a stretch.

It isn’t like City have had a poor season and been there for the taking either. By their own standards bad seasons for them in recent years were 86 points in 2021 (still 12 more than United in 2nd) and 81 points in 2020 when Liverpool knocked them off their perch with that 99 point haul. This year has been more in line with their stronger finishes so I’m not as gutted as I’d have been if they were dropping points all over the place and we didn’t take advantage.

It's going to be a massive missed opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised to see Arsenal back out of the top 4 next year and Arteta managing a Spanish club. Arsenal have done fantastically well but I think this season will be a false dawn. They didn't bottle it. Up until today the only difference between them and City was 2 extra draws. They had both lost 4 games and I don't think there's many seasons Manu won the PL with less than 4 losses and it's far more competitive than when they dominated.

They had a great run at it but it will unravel now.

Regardless of what happens in the next few games, credit to Arsenal to push City this far into the season with the depth of their squad. So respect for that.

That said....next season will be tough for them, with CL they need to seriously, seriously reinforce their squad. The same set of players won't be able to go the same distance with CL games side by side. You can't bet on City stumbling first half of the season. If they go at it with a similar set of players and size of the squad, they might do a Liverpool and miss out of Top 4 due to more games, more injuries.

I get why people are going to say Arsenal bottled it given the last few weeks but it was nothing to do with bottle, they just were never as good as their early season form suggested.

I don't mean it as a dig nor am I suggesting they were lucky but everything that could go Arsenal's way in the first 3/4's of the season went their way. Every player performed to their absolute peak and whenever they dipped a little bit, they just found a way to scrape a win. It wasn't sustainable though and a number of players have dropped back to their normal level.
Yeah, a bit like when Liverpool won it.

This is always a myth in my opinion that City start off slow then get going. I personally believe that the other teams are lot fresher and have the starting eleven to challenge City at the beginning of the season then slide down towards the end whereas City have the depth of squad to do what they want.

Liverpool were immense for a few seasons and fell off a cliff because of this and I have seen first hand with United that the players are just done for after all the games they have played this season. Bruno is running on pure adrenalin by now. I would also include Westham after the past couple of seasons they have had to drop off the way they have this season. We also saw it with Wolves and Burnley when they got into Europe. Maybe you could also include Leicester City after several seasons in Europe.

97 points followed up by 99 points, that's our level :p

When you look at those seasons in hindsight it was in reality a two horse race back then. 19/20 we got 3rd with 66 points and Frank Lampard qualified for the Champions League!

18/19 Season.
Poch coming to the end of Spurs who were on the beginning of their decline.
OGS at United. The PE teacher ;).
Unai Emery taking over a stale Arsenal from Wenger.
Sarri at Chelsea who hasn't really done anything of note since leaving.

The way the Prem is looking into next season it is going to be far more competitive than ever.

ETH United.
Klopp Liverpool.
Pep City.
Arsenal Arteta.
Aston Villa Unai.
Chelsea Poch.
Newcastle Oil Money plus Howe is growing.
Spurs. Lol

If Chelsea and United don't buy well then you can't pretty much count both out.

I'd agree that 2nd to 5th is going to be more competitive but I fully expect City to wrap up the league again next season. Regardless of who the other teams buy in the summer I dont see anyone stopping City winning the title next season. As I said earlier if it was critically important that you predicted the winner of the title next season correctly, almost everyone would say Man City. 2nd to 5th will be a right old royal rumble next season but that league trophy is staying sky blue for a little while longer yet.

I think arteta deserves a shout.
