Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 19th May 2022]

So basically Newcastle will be competing for top 4 next season?

It honestly wouldn't surprise me. They can spend quite a bit in the summer with FFP thanks to their previous ownership. It only took City a couple of seasons to get into the qualifying positions after the oil money came in. They only need to find that Aguero type of player and they have a chance.

Plus you only have two guaranteed to get into the top 4 next season.

Chelsea and Manchester United are massive unknowns for next season so it will be up for grabs.

I know there are some that said no Europe was Arsenal's best chance of making the top 4 but ultimately no Europe and the money it brings has cost Arsenal the chance of top 4. Had they afforded to hold even a slightly bigger squad in this 2nd half of this season then they'd have probably had 4th in the bag by now but instead they're going to be praying for a miracle on the final day.

Missing out this year will be a massive blow for Arsenal and to miss out to Spurs makes it doubly worse and not just because of the rivalry between the two. The extra money for Spurs and the increased likelihood that Conte stays means Arsenal will next season be competing against 5 sides with more money than them (ranging from ~£80m to ~£200m more) and 4 of those sides with significantly better managers. It could be a few more years before Arsenal get another realistic chance of making the CL now but then again, Utd could carry on as they are, Conte could go to PSG and Chelsea out of business.
If you’re in the Europa league, you’ve got a realistic chance of getting champs league football, and with the extra CL spot we’re getting soon, our chances are not as gloomy as may first seem.

Arsenal's best chance of CL football moving forwards will be via the Europa I suspect. As for the extra CL spot we're getting, that's not as straight forward as you think. It goes to the two leagues with the highest coefficient from that season so if PL clubs perform poorly in Europe then 5th place won't get a CL spot.

City weren't operating within FFP when they were taken over, nor was there this level of competition at the top.

As for Newcastle and FFP. What some people don't seem to understand is that the way transfer fees are accounted for, the costs of signings (on the accounts) gradually build up so while Newcastle could spend big this summer, it would then restrict what they could spend moving forwards because the cost of signings made in January and again this summer will still be expenses on the accounts in several years to come.

I’m not worried about that lol, you and City will guarantee it for us every year :p

I'm not sure about City Rob, they've never won a thing in Europe. Thankfully for the PL Liverpool are European royalty and the nation should be supporting us next Saturday for the good of the country and PL.

I could easily see Newcastle pushing close to 7th next season with the right signings. They are 10 points off at the moment and have had a horrific half of a season.

It's been quite a remarkable turnaround, and the buzz will carry on into the next season if they bring in some big names.

Newcastle should be pushing for Europe next season with the budget they have. Outside of the "traditional top 6" its a bit of a free for all and a bit of well spent money should put you above most of it.

Newcastle really need a couple of seasons around 5th-7th before pushing any further. I think doing too much too soon could cause problems.

Pinch of salt obviously, but not that surprising if true.
Wouldn't be remotely surprised if that's the case. Other than maybe Konate and Keita, I wouldn't be surprised if no outfield players who started the Cup final start tonight.

At a guess it'll be something like: Alisson, Gomez, Konate, Matip, Kostas, Keita, Milner, Jones, Jota, Firmino & Origi. With Fabinho already a small doubt for the CL final, I'd be amazed if Thiago or Hendo, both prone to the odd niggle, start tonight having played 120 minutes at the weekend. Diaz and Robertson both ran themselves into the ground on Saturday and you're not taking chances with either Mo or VVD.

Om is just here for the red cards and the bantz. Only reason he supports Liverpool is because of the colour of their shirts and he was too cool to support United when we were good.
That second part of your post is seriously accurate. I support Liverpool and have done since i was like 6 because my family are from Manchester so support them or Oldham and i had to go against the grain didn't I lol.

Always. Love doing the old shooting stars leg rub when ones brewing.

My father was born and bread seven sisters so you couldn't be more Spurs if you tried. The fact is as kids we will always opt for the popular teams even though Spurs had Gazza at the time. Unless you force it down your kids throats like I have done :p
