Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [15th - 17th April 2023]

Great results for us this weekend and a good performance earlier. Bruno & Eriksen really knit things together well.

Arsenal are having their inevitable wobble now as the title race heats up - I wouldn't write them off just yet but the pressure really is on now... but City still have a lot of games this month and might struggle with fatigue.

Just means they cant have another blip. They needed something at the Etihad prior to today and they still do now. Not a lot has changed.

Unfortunately I'm not convinced. The reason City usually finish the season so strong is because they have an insane squad. If basically any player gets injured they have a top class backup.

They can bring on 5 subs that would get in the first XI of almost any other team in the league. Competition for places is fierce so when someone is not performing you just replace them with someone just as good.

I really hope Arsenal can hold on but I don't see it.

As for United, if we can beat Spurs I think we will get top 4. We could be 12 points or more clear of Spurs with only 6 games left.

Yep said it at the start of the season - It's a compounding advantage too... As it contrasts to the teams they will now face who will be flagged, scrapping for places. All the while city have been gently rotating their squad all year, finding what fits and now they're just ready for a run in.

Arsenal will do well to keep up, I've got my fingers crossed.

The amount they have spent in terms of their squad value is just insane compared to the rest of the competition. Everyone always likes to bring up United but when you break down all the money wasted none of the players are even there anymore or are basically out the door.

Pogba 95m
Di Maria 68m
Lukaku 76m
Maguire 80m

That is 300 million of wastage right there. Transfermarkt seems to agree as well putting our squad value about 250 million less than cities.

City have spent and spent albeit absolutely exceptionally. Look back at 17/18

John Stone, Kyle Walker, Gundogan, Silva, Ederson all still at the club. Plus you still have had pre pep signings like De Bruyne who is still there and Sterling, Fernandhino who have all been there until last season. Erling Haaland also didn't cost what was reported and is easily the most expensive player in history that no one else could have really afforded in the Prem. They just build and build with very rarely a bad buy. Add their fake revenue and there is no stopping them over a sustained period of time.

In any other period of time Klopp's Liverpool would have gone down as another dynasty in their history with 3 League titles. Instead they have just the 1.

What has happened at Arsenal has been amazing and when you look back at the way it has been built up over the past 3 years you could do a thesis on how to run a successful football club. The way they got rid of Ozil, Auba and then the staff changes and recruitment. They have got it spot on and have a solid young backbone to build for the future but then you have City which will just pummel them into the ground.

If we get a Qatari backed take over we will be in the same situation. Under Glazers ownership (Or any other normal ownership) spending 60-80 million on a 30 year old Kane in the summer would seem madness but under Qatari ownership it becomes irrelevant as our revenues are so high we can basically spend what we like.

It's going to be an interesting end to the season, that's for sure. The relegation battle is extremely close, and the battle for top four is still difficult to call in my opinion. As a Manchester United fan, we still have some very tricky fixtures upcoming.

Spurs - Sure, everyone likes to mock Spurs but they're a capable team on their day. An inform Son and Kane against the CB pairing of Maguire and Lindelof could be a concern
Brighton - They look a right handful at the moment
Villa - Appear to have a good run of form, appreciate up until Newcastle they didn't exactly have many a tough test but the display against Newcastle was solid

I think Villa have the best record of any team apart from the top 2 since Emery took over.

Gonna be a strange run in for Chelsea, assuming they get knocked out of the CL tomorrow they will have very little to play for, 10 points off Europe and 12 points clear of relegation. So they could have 7 pretty meaningless league games, under a caretaker manager so it's not even as if they can use those games for the manager to experiment a bit ahead of next season. Kind of obvious where their problem lies, I mean even Leicester who are 19th have scored more than a third more goals than them.

their goals came earlier in the season pre WC when several players needed to impress. Since the return LCFC struggle to score

Is it luck to get almost 100 points 3 seasons running?

No but it would have been interesting to see how the teams would had done without coronavirus in the middle. Smaller squads got the advantage of extra rest. Something that would go in Liverpool's favour and against Cities who rely on having two teams to steam roll their way through the tail end of the season.

It will be interesting to see how Liverpool do without Europe next season. It will be a blessing in disguise and will allow them to come back stronger in 24/25. Maybe even a title charge with the right signings in 23/24.
