Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th-19th Oct 2020]

This VAR offside thing has been done to death. The VAR camera's and subsequent lines are caliberated to take into account the camera angle - the only real issue with it is the frame rate of the camera's but whatever it is, is better than a humans eye.

The controversy around this offside (and the VVD/Pickford incident) is because we've now changed where they measure handballs. Last season both Mane and VVD would have been onside because they would have drawn the line from their shoulder. However because of all the controversy around handballs when the ball was striking the attackers shoulder area, they tweaked the handball law so it must strike below the shirt sleeve. As a result of this a forward can now legally play the ball with the top of their arm so that's where they draw the offside line from.

edit: this explains it:

Still a red card though. The ball is still live. Offside hasn't been called yet.

Yep, there was initially some confusion on that point but Dale corrected himself. It couldn't be a pen but it should have been a red. The VAR official ****ed up. You can excuse officials for making mistakes but it's quite shocking that he forgot to check for a red.

It doesn’t work like that. It is to do with the order of fouls. Otherwise, any time a defender fouled a player through on goal it would be a straight red. Now if the player was offside, but the flag hadn’t gone up yet, they should get a straight red because the flag hadn’t gone up fast enough??

The laws to punish Pickford already exist. A serious/dangerous tackle or foul can be punished at any point regardless of whistles, flags or VAR. This is what should have been used to send Pickford off, there doesn’t need to be any other change to the rules.

He's not really underrated is he?

We paid £20m for him when he had less than a year on his contract and had a crap injury history.

He's a good player and regarded as a good player i'd say
What I mean by that is he wasn’t really given much of a chance at Liverpool(yes due to injury) and you paid £20m for a striker that got you over 20 league goals last season, isnt the going rate for a 20+ striker more like £40-50m

Are there regulations on football shirt sleeve lengths? Tank tops anyone?

I think the point Kenai is making is they didn't sign a 20+ goal striker. They signed an injury hit striker with a short contract. The general feeling when they signed him was that Liverpool had their pants down. He subsequently went on to become a 20 goal striker and has received loads of praise for it.

You would hope that they aren't actually measuring from the players actual shirt sleeve as players with long sleeve shirts may cause some issues with that law. I believe it's the half way point between the shoulder and elbow.

Not historically 'injury prone' ones who made 14 appearances in 3 years with hardly any contract left, no, £40m+ is not the going rate. We paid the going, probably over the going rate if you go back and look at what a lot of Saints fans thought about that transfer before he started banging the goals in. He's a good player with an unlucky injury history but I think he's generally always been regarded as a decent player.

Some quotes from the SaintsWeb forums from when the transfer first became apparant:

Desperation deal
Seems like a waste of money
I don't rate him at all - hopefully he'll prove me wrong
One good season in the championship a long time ago is about the sum of his career
Desperate times
Our record for signing mis-firing strikers continues
I think I'd rather stick with Gallagher. He's cheaper, younger, and offers more potential upside

Fair one, but Liverpool also saw the potential in him, you both know more about him than me but I wouldn’t go as far as injury prone, he managed over 120 games for Burnley in 4 years, was it both Cruciate Ligaments he snapped at Liverpool, I would consider that more unlucky then prone, TBH I would consider someone like Kieron Dyer injury prone.

Sigma - Trolling much !!
You seemed so sure Mane was offside but when asked to point our where you said you wasn't a VAR machine, Class :D

See photo below - The Everton players foot is playing Mane onside.

Everything I said is factually correct :p :D

Using stats from TransferMarkt, Ings has had 5 injuries resulting in 99 missed games to Dyer's 6 injuries resulting in 98 missed games. Probably couldn't have picked a player with more similar stats if you tried :p

:p:pTBH dyer was the first to spring to mind as I remember him always injured for the toon and West Ham, thing with ings is the majority of his time injured was due to his snapped Cruciate Ligaments which I still maintain is an unlucky injury, dyer was always his hamstrings or shin splints which is a more chronic injury

Both Manchester United and Chelsea have got very very good teams, but they are both missing that top top(klopp, pep or Steve Bruce:p:D) manager to challenge for the league
