Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 20th October 2022]

Any spurs fans around increasingly worried about how terrible your games are?

The football is awful to watch.

I said this on redcafe and a spurs fan basically said that currently he would rather win something than play attractive football which is fair enough. I can't understand it but he was just being honest.

Just watched the highlights from the United game, Casemiro was sensational.

Everton were so bad against us.

He was. Combative. Popped up all over the place. One touch passing when necessary and knew where his teammates were. Lots of passing through the Spurs lines. That was one of the big differences last night. We played hard, accurate passed between the lines to take Spurs players out of the game and move the whole team up the pitch.

Even DDG has been showing some good signs of becoming a more progressive keeper. We will get games like last night under EtH this season and we will have a slog for plenty as well. I believe he is the right man for the job though.

Decent we can agree with but he has plenty to pick from that are better than Maguire.
I don't need convincing that Maguire's not very good but I fail to see a CB pairing (or back 3) that England could pick and be any better off. Maybe you could name 2 CB's better than him but I don't see how you pick a balanced 2 (or 3). A lot of England's CB options, as well as being woefully out of form, playing out of position and or not being picked, are secondary CB's if that makes sense. They're the guy that plays on the cover behind a physically dominant CB that's going to win physical challenges or defend long balls. Maguire and Mings are probably the only two CB's in the England mix that play that lead CB role and as bad or out of form as Maguire is, Mings is no better.

Gutted Chelsea never snapped him up now.
That is going to end up being the miss of the season. I saw one fan on twitter during the close season arguing for selling him, with the logic that if they were in for a player of his ability for even half that money the Everton fans would've been outraged. I agree with that, quite why Chelsea even went that high when he wasn't in demand is baffling. They should have taken the money.

I watched Man U vs Spurs last night as a neutral. Spurs were absolutely dog poo apart from Lloris who apart from one slightly dodgy moment first half, did a pretty good job.

Midget Martinez bossed Kane. He could become as good as Mascherano or Cannervaro if he keeps playing like that.

Get Dunky and Webster in there ;)

People keep saying that Loris played a blinder. From what I saw, Rashford kept shooting directly at him. A better finisher would have buried at least one of his many shots.

Apparently Martinez has been great. Glad I was wrong about him :)

That kind of applies to almost every good goalkeeping performance. A worse keeper would have let at least one of those in. If a striker does their job well, the best keeper in the world doesn’t stand a chance.

Not really? There are some shots you expect keepers to save surely? Especially ones that are straight at them. Admittedly I only watched the highlights quickly but they didn't seem like anything other than saves you'd expect most keepers to make? My point was that it was (once again) poor finishing rather than amazing keeping.

Positioning and footwork are the building blocks for saves, claims, interceptions etc. Being in the right place to save the shots isn't as easy as it looks.

You watch someone like Kepa when he was rubbish and his footwork was awful. I think they've worked on him with that as it's looked better recently.

Tomori?

Gomez? White?
Gomez has barely played, certainly at CB, for two years and has been a bit all over the place since coming back into the side this season. White is a bit meh and has been shifted to RB for Arsenal. They're both players who would partner a more physically dominant CB.

As for Tomori, I won't pretend to have watched Milan play other than 2 games vs Liverpool last season.
