Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [1st - 5th April 2023]

It’s not a slight on Howe but history dictates he’ll have a shelf life. Right now he’s doing well but that won’t last as it hasn’t for pretty much every single manager excluding a very select few.

Poch was building something at Tottenham and he reached highs they’ve never seen yet he was quickly discarded of. It will happen that you can be sure of.

You have wealthy owners who will throw money at the club but, they will want a return for that and behind the public appearance of wanting to build a team, they will want success in a similar fashion to the other state owned club. Howe will be gone as soon as results start slipping or as soon as a sexier manager becomes available. Howe is domestic level and eventually you will acknowledge that.
What a load of *****, we haven’t thrown anything like the money amount that every man and his dog thought we would. It’s rather disrespectful to Howe to label him a domestic manager without seeing how he does in European competitions first. You probably would have labelled Arteta a domestic manager and look how he’s doing, the arrogance of some fans really makes me laugh sometimes.

It’s not arrogance at all he’s a domestic manager until proven otherwise, if he proves otherwise then opinions will change thus far he’s been sacked by Bournemouth for a reason and done magnificently to guide Newcastle to a European place, albeit after spending a lot of money and uncharacteristically bad season for 2 teams who you would expected to finish above you.

Newcastle are owned by an oil state we know how this is going to go down we have seen the blueprint already. That’s a completely fair assumption to make.

Arteta is a domestic manager you have just answered your own question. He has done nothing in Europe yet. I would love for Eddie Howe to do well but going from playing 30 odd games a season to playing 50+ is a whole different kettle of fish. Just look what has happened to the likes of Burnley, Wolves, Westham once they got into Europe.

You have spent 300 million. Only teams who have spent more recently are the 3 teams above you.

If Unai Emery gets Villa into Europe after the start they had with Slippy I would say that is an even bigger achievement than what Howe has done with Newcastle as you have bought a whole new spine in the last few windows.

Having ultra-wealthy owners certainly helps but it's a different playing field today compared to when City and on a smaller scale, Chelsea were taken over.

Newcastle have had a massive bounceback this season but their owners will be aware that a longer-term building process is required. They aren't going to be falsifying revenue streams like City were.

They could do that under FFP due to fat Mike barely opening his wallet over the past decade. They won't be spending 300 mil every season going forward.

I don't think it's possible tbh - there's too much scrutiny nowadays

Even as an Arsenal fan I have to concede that yes, Artetas doing great, but he ain’t half spent a lot of money over the last two seasons.

They have gone from spending a fiver to £300 million that wouldn’t have happened without the buyout. They are going to keep spending as much as they can, just like we have done over the years albeit without a nations backing.

Howe has done well but he will reach his ceiling and the owners will want more as the expectations will inevitably dictate. This seasons was a free ride next season won’t be.
