Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [22nd - 24th October 2022]

I remember when Toon bought Pope, or he was getting linked with the bigger clubs, and it was how he would be 'found out' with his lack of distribution, just pumping it long with Burnley must be so easy for a Keeper. Newcastle have kept him doing that but if he isn't good with the ball at his feet don't play out from the back. It's working
No doubt about that but it's another change of approach from Howe, which was the point of my post that Bigpig replied to. Howe's gone from trying to be a mini Pep to an ultra pragmatic manager.

Fair play, you live and learn, like you said Bournemouth were great to watch, scored loads, played great attacking football but shipped loads, just like Leeds :D (but we can barely even score anymore) - We need someone who can organise us in a similar way.

As you say, there are long balls and long passes. There was a stat on twitter the other week re teams who go long from their keepers and iinm Newcastle were 2nd to Southampton.
How far we up the pitch? Where is the defensive line?

How many touches have we had in the opponent half?
Touches in opponent box?

I belive we are pretty high in all metrics.

Only you, City and Chelsea shoot closer than us.

Most peeps were mocking Newcastle signings let's be honest.

Pope 10m, Tripper 12m, Burn 12m, Botman 35m, Targett 14m.

Brand new defence for around the same money clubs spend on one defender.

Recruitment has been outstanding.

Howe has a magic wand. Joelinton and Miggy, Schar are like new players. Even Longstaff is slowly getting back to the sort of form he had under Raffa.

I said Pope was a cracking purchase, would have loved him at Leicester even before Schmeichel left for Nice.

We only bought one player, who's turning out to be another cracking defender, Wout has definitely settled the defence now. :)

Ok?

edit: You seem to have taken my post as some sort of criticism of Newcastle when it clearly wasn't. My comment was purely on how Howe has changed his approach as a manager from his time at Bournemouth.

Botman? His distribution is well mint ;) think I posted his passing rader not that long ago.

Think it's more to do with the Longball tag. To me that's lumping it up the pitch and getting a knock down/on

Newcastle play is very varied at present and do often play out from the back.

I said 'more longer balls' than with Bournemouth. As others have said, with Pope in goal it's natural but that wouldn't have been the case with Howe at Bournemouth. He always tried to play the football you'd expect a Liverpool or City to play, he got a lot of praise for it too but it was also to his detriment when they got tonked every few weeks.

Because the standard of refereeing is absolutely abysmal, has been abysmal for years and will continue to be abysmal.

I'm saying refereeing in general, including VAR, liner, ref etc. As a collective, it's abysmal.

The simple fact is, VAR doesn't take away the subjective element of decisions, as it's a contact sport, I don't see a way round that - ever.

Offsides and goal line tech is all fine - as is highlighting foul play the ref may not have seen.

Out of all the handballs that have been given, I’m stunned that wasn’t ruled out for West Ham. It looks like it’s actually deliberate and they’ve said it’s fine?!
