Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th - 30th Dec 2020]

I still think Liverpool will win the league but I think Liverpool's Squad depth isn't helping them with these incredibly busy fixtures. They have a real decent 11-14 players but everything after that is either injured or average.

I think that is playing into United's favour. We managed to rest Fred, Mctominay, Lindelof and to some extent Martial last game whilst still fielding a decent first eleven. Depending on the result against Villa it will make the game at Anfield interesting although I think Liverpool will still win it as we are just not there at the moment.

dude you’re second in the league and will be playing a Liverpool blighted by injuries. I expect you to win 1-0

You say that as if they are victims. Klopp knew Lovren was leaving and Matip is made of glass. They made a huge gamble for VVD being injury free and didn't bring in any replacements. They need to buy in January anyway because who knows what VVD will come back after his injury.

Lovren was replaced by Thiago with the idea Fabinho is more then capable of playing CB. What Klopp didnt count on is Everton being mindless thugs and putting the best CB in the world out for the season and crippling Thiago. The idea that Liverpool dont have depth when they bring on a player like Thiago is laughable. Oxlade Chamberlain is sat there with Gini Wijnaldum, Minamino and soon Keita. Then you can add Jota to that in the near ish future. We are top of the league with players coming back, we will only get stronger.

what? Victims? Wtf are you on about? I’m merely stating how it is gtfo out of here with that “always the victim” nonsense

What has Ox done since he has come to Liverpool apart from be on the injury table all the time. Getting on to 4 seasons he has played on average less than 20 games a season and that's not even full games.

Gini is a first team player, Minamino is an average squad player as is Keita really even though his price was high.

Jota and Thiago are about the only one that seems to have that star quality and can make a difference coming on. When I compare to Cities and United's bench it just doesn't compare.

I mean you were playing that Curtis Jones who doesn't seem a bad squad player but he doesn't have the quality of Greenwood or Foden.

This is not a post about Liverpool having a worse team. Their top starting eleven is the best in the country but City and United have better depth which can help in situations like this. In a normal season this would be a non issue for them but alas it isn't.

We saw what happened to City when they lost Laporte last season and Fernanades is singlehandedly carrying United this season. You lose him for any length of time and you're absolutely screwed. No amount of squad depth is making up for his loss and the overall quality of your squad gets massively exposed with him out.

Edit: As for Jones, he's played 120 minutes more than Greenwood this season yet has only scored 1 less goal in a Klopp midfield that historically hasn't scored many goals or provided many assists. I think it's more of a case of Greenwood being massively overrated tbh. He's the next Danny Welbeck.

He's the next Danny Welbeck.

If that genuinely is your opinion and not just your clear anti United bias then you are delusional. No one with half a brain ever thought Danny Welbeck would become a world beater. Plenty of people are saying that Greenwood could be if he applies himself and continues to improve.

You do realise we're top of the League still? Surely the fact that we're top, despite all our injuries and this abnormal season suggests we've got a strong squad.

Our issue is that our injuries have been focussed in central defence and central midfield. You cannot plan for 2 x 6-9 month injuries in the same position, not least them both happening in the first couple of months of the season. And then to top things off, the plan to use Fabinho as our 4th CB backfires when we have 4 of our CM options out for anything from 3 weeks to 3 months of the season. The end result is we've had to put out makeshift CB pairings for half the season and the same few players have had to play nearly every minute of every game in midfield too. But we're still top!

Thankfully our CM situation is easing and we surely (please Jurgen!) will sign a CB in January.

Indeed, a long way to go for Greenwood but he's probably the best finisher I've ever seen at his age.

United fans are bizarre, I like Greenwood but if you think hes better now then say Michael Owen was at his age then theres no helping you.

As for Jones vs Greenwood and Foden. Well only one of the three would be close to a YPOTY award and its Jones.

@adam_cool_dude

For the lack of depth we absolutely walked the league this season and are top now. We've had some woeful decisions go against us, including last night, so the gap could arguably be close to double figures

Gutted about Cavani, tis was a good opportunity to get level with Liverpool

Can still happen but 3 games with Ighalo as a substitute

But if you look at it like that Liverpool have Origi :D

The Welbeck comparison was a joke but it's no more of a joke than suggesting a team that's top of the table, despite having so many injuries, doesn't have squad depth.

You are making the wrong comparison. You should be comparing the team to the Liverpool side of last year. Liverpool have arguably dropped off more than last season than other teams around them have grown unless your suggesting Liverpool's last season was a total fluke and totally reliant on VVD.
