Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 12th January 2023]

Too many players underperforming and Liverpool have always been a team that just relentlessly pummels the opposition since they have been good again. Now they aren't doing that there are far too many holes in this side. Defensively you can get away with Robertson and TAA doing very little defending when the opposition rarely sees your 1/3rd of the pitch. VVD was the best CB in the world for a few years but has fallen off a bit of a cliff. Midfield hasn't been replenished and is at the heart of their issues. Causing problems throughout.

The funny thing is that despite all this, they aren't doing that badly and if Nunez and/or Salah can remember where the goal is they will start pummelling teams again. They are still creating good chances, they are just conceding a lot of them too.

Newcastle are probably being most consistent along with arsenal.

I didn't think it at start of season but I'd he surprised to see Newcastle drop out

Going to lots of twists before the end of this season I think.
Newcastle fixure list is pretty decent. Could change with cup progression.

We really need Isak back (January at some stage) and better quality in the middle of the park if teams are going to set up to play for a draw.

In saying that we battered Leeds and had 3 guilt edge chances we didn't take.

More evidence that we need to stop fannying about and get cover for Fabinho (and the midfield in general), which is why I keep saying we should move for Amrabat as he would be a good alternative to Fabinho. Maddening thing is that its been fairly obvious to most people for 12 months that the midfield needs strengthening but we keep succumbing to the all eggs in one basket philosophy , which is great when it pays off and useless when it doesnt.

It's more than a little weird being a Brentford supporter right now. As someone mentioned that's Man City, Man Utd and Liverpool beat this season, with wins against Chelsea and Arsenal last. If we hadn't blown a two goal lead last week against Spurs we'd have beaten all of the top six.

That starting 11 had 8 from our Championship squad, 2 free signings and just 1 we paid a fee for as a top flight side.

Absolute chaos. Just need a few of the bottom sides to be cast adrift and this could be a very enjoyable second half of the season.

I almost didn't go tonight in still hungover from NYE!

Looking at the table, I think there is a good chance the top 4 will stay how it is at the end of the season. Spurs, Chelsea & Liverpool are all dropping points regularly, and that is just not good enough when Newcastle haven't shown much signs of letting off their foot off the gas despite 1 draw with Leeds. Man U are certainly found something in the tank to grind out 1-0 wins and keep clean sheets, even with Shaw in centre back.

Liverpool just have too soft a centre, their midfield can get overrun and then that put far too much pressure to the defence.

Chelsea, I am not sure what they are doing but they are not clicking, Spurs just can't defend, period.

At this rate I think Brighton and Brentford would be challenging with them for the 5th and 6th spot. Actually I think Villa too could do something, they are only 4 points behind Chelsea now and they have turned a corner it seems.

This will be very interesting tonight.

2 of the longest unbeaten steaks up for grabs.

I would be a little more confident if it was at home.

Toon 12
Arsenal 10

The thing for me is that Arsenal are red hot in front of goal, yet out defensive Record is stone cold. Be interesting if they can break us down and stop us countering.
