Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 5th Feb 2021]

The only club getting top 4 with the same amount of injuries to major players as Liverpool have had would be City.

Yep probably. Mane, Alisson and the obvious two defenders to be all out is a killer but to add Jota to that aswell is too much it seems however no team in the league could take all senior cbs being out with long term injuries.

Can only really hope for the new defenders to bed in quickly, couple of players back from injuries, players back in their better positions and kicking on for a decent run of form.

Saying that only City are substantially better on form at the moment, the other top 4 hopefuls are equally hot and cold.

Just get the midfielders in midfield or at least Henderson.

That just isnt true lmao.

Okay I will bite. VVD, Gomez, Matip, Mane , Jota , Alisson are all out. Lets say for United we have Lindelof, Maguire, Bailly (Technically I could put Phil Jones here but I am being nice), Martial, Greenwood, De- Gea.

That Leaves a starting lineup of

Henderson (Europa league winner and world cup finalist Romero as cover)

Shaw, Tuanzebe, Mctominay (he plays defence for Scotland), AWB. (Brandon Williams as cover for the full backs and Telles could release Shaw into a left CB position if needed)

Midfield Poggers, Fernandes, Fred (Still have Matic, VDB and Mata to choose from)

Forward line of Rashford, Cavani, Daniel James (Potentially could be breakthrough for Diallo. Mata and VDB could also swap in for James playing a diamond or even Pogba on the left)

We would still be playing well with that line-up and have done as Ole has changed up to 8 players between games recently. Also if we were in Liverpool's situation we would have actually bought a premier league quality CB in January.

As for Chelsea they have an absolute monster of a squad. Just that Frank was a complete noob. Tuchel however should do a lot better.

Liverpool just don't have enough depth, they've been lucky with injuries in recent seasons but now it's costing them not signing enough cover. Going into a season with 3 senior CB's is just ridiculously bad decision making. You can claim Fabinho can play CB as much as you like but if his absence from midfield causes this many problems then it's not a viable option.

Except, freak Southampton result aside, Utd and other top four hopefuls are not playing especially well.

In the league we have lost to a Sheffield United that the refs report admitted was a mistake and lost to City in the cup which is understandable as with their current form are in a different league. Last time we lost in the league before Sheffield United was three months ago against Arsenal. One thing I am certain of is that we will get top four this season.

I dont think the club were thinking all three would have season ending injuries to be fair. Theres one thing having depth but when 8 players who normally would get into the 11 are out theres only so much depth you can have. If you take UTD for eg how would they cope if Bailly, Maguire, Lindelof, De Gea, Rashford, Fernandes, Martial and McSauce were injured?

Right so you are taking your best holding midfielder and playing him at CB losing his influence in midfield...what if he's injured like Fabinho is...Are we saying United don't have depth?

Of course not. You're now going to the likes of Matic and Mata to play who lets face it...aren't remotely good enough to play for United anymore. This isnt a one off either, over the course of the season you'd imo struggle to get top 4.

Okay I will bite...
And yet the excuse from a number of Utd fans on here for Utd's poor form for half of last season was Pogba being missing. And if Utd were consistently having to put out a team like the one you mentioned above you wouldn't be playing as well.

Oh and Chelsea's monster squad, without the injuries are currently 8th Adam. Are you saying if they had all the injuries they'd be doing better

The first part about luck with injuries is nothing but ignorant nonsense. The issue around not signing a 4th CB was a calculated but fairly small gamble. It was clear that we couldn't sign another cb and sign Thiago without selling somebody, the most obvious being Wijnaldum. Had we signed this Kabak guy in the summer and not signed Thiago or sold Wijnaldum nobody could argue we'd have been light at CB or midfield. We'd have had 4 central defenders + Fabinho if needed and had 7 central midfielders + Shaq if needed. Would we have been any better off? No. Because of VVD's injury it was ignored that we also had 4 central midfielders (+ Shaq) out for most of the start of the season, leaving us threadbare. Instead of playing with Fabinho + Matip (when the latter was available) + Hendo, Wijnaldum & Jones in midfield, we'd have been playing with Kabak + Matip with Hendo, Fabinho & Jones. Unless you think Kabak is significantly better than Fabinho at CB then we'd not any better off than we were.

Chelsea have just had a really bad manager. Their squad is fantastic on paper with plenty of depth. I guess we will have to wait till the end of the season to quote this but I think they will climb quite quickly with Tuchel. Whilst I do not rate him in the same level as Klopp/Guardiola is a massive improvement over Frank.

You didn't really read at all. This was merely speculative lineup. You could play Luke Shaw as left Centre back and Telles on the the left freeing up Mctominay back into midfield. I even made my hypothetical injury list worse than yours as I listed 4 injured centre backs to your three. We have a very strong squad whether you want to believe it or not. The quality might not be up their with your best eleven but drop off in depth isn't as severe which in a season like this one is a positive.

Right but then you lose him as a lb...we could play Robertson as a lcb and Tzimikas as a lb but you wouldnt want to do it. You then lose Robertsons width and quality.

Yes but then we would still have Telles to play LB . You have just shown exactly my point. I have never even seen the LB you mentioned play for Liverpool. Telles has played 13 games this season and offers just as much as Luke Shaw to our team.

He's been injured mate lol.

Disagree about Telles. Shaw for me has been far superior.
