Greenlizard0 PL/CS/FA Cup SF Football Thread ** spoilers ** [15th - 21st April 2022]

For anybody wondering what the situation is regarding European qualification now Chelsea and Liverpool are in the FA Cup final, Dale Johnson's put out a thread explaining it here:
Long story short, 7th will go into the Europa Conference League unless it's West Ham finishing 7th and they also win the Europa League, in which case they will go into the CL with no side in the Conference League. Assuming Leicester won't finish in the top 7, if they win the Conference League then they will go into the Europa League but not at the expense of 5th, 6th (both into the EL) or 7th (into the ECL). Same story if West Ham win the EL but finish outside the top 7 - they will go into the CL but there will be no effect on those finishing 5th-7th.

Their run-in might not be bad but they're ****ing awful. Even if you don't pick up another point all season, which you will, realistically they've got to win at least two, probably 3 of their last 7 games. They've managed 4 wins from their previous 31.

Hmm, they got a good point today, arguably would have won if Cornet had scored the pen. New boss and all that, I’m not confident it will be a simple as you suggest.

I am not saying they cannot lose but 12 out of the last 20 winners are London teams.
Sure, but 4 of the top 7 teams in the league at present are London teams.

The only way to measure it effectively would be to look at finals where a London team faced a non London team, and then weigh that for the quality of the teams involved, to come to some sort of weighted average of London versus non London teams, ignoring the differences in quality, so you can then more realistically attribute any variance to the location of the match. And that's not something I have any desire to undertake.

Only 15 of those 20 finals were played at Wembley :p And of those 15 only 10 featured London sides (including Watford) vs non London sides. Of those 10, London based sides won 7 but that includes Chelsea or Arsenal beating, Everton, Portsmouth, Hull and Villa. I think it's fair to say the difference in quality of the two sides played a far bigger role in the outcome than x making a 30 minute flight on a private jet and then a 40 minute coach ride to a 5 star hotel.

edit: the only advantage to London based sides would be that they're likely to be staying in more familiar surroundings the night before the game. Almost all sides stay in a hotel before games and a Chelsea or Arsenal would probably stay in the same hotel as they do before any other game. That said, non London sides will also probably stay in the same hotel as they use x amount of times during the season when they're playing all the different London based teams too.

edit2: I've just checked League Cup Finals at the New Wembley too. There's been 6 London vs non London finals and the London side lost all 6 :p
