Greenlizard0 PL & FA Cup Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 22nd July 2020]

It’s the frustration with him and Mustafi. They can play like this then go and make game-costing individual mistakes - maybe if we were more devastating going forward it wouldn’t matter so much if they made the odd howler.

Anyway, that was just as satisfying as the other semi against them. Hopefully can make it happen again in the final. Great assists today from Pepe and Tierney too.

Also the lack of crowd has been a massive help; Arteta has been able to coach constantly since the restart (in about 4 languages) from the dugout which at this point is still something a lot of the team need and it seems to all be slowly coming together. Give the man anything he wants!

Congrats to Arsenal and thanks to Aubameyang. Had a Betfair bonus fiver on him to score in the first 20 mins. BBC website had goal at 19 mins :) 18-1 kerching.

One thing I’m convinced of is that, I accept it might not happen with us, but I think Arteta is going to be one of the top world managers over the next 15-20 years. He’s 38, 2 years younger than me ffs.

Id hold fire on that. Like last week Arsenal were very fortunate. City could have scored 6. City missing chances isnt genius tactics...its luck.

To do it once is luck, to do it twice within days of each other shows fortitude.

Rob...come on. You beat us because of our errors. City missed a handful last night. You're sounding like United fans now who think they'll challenge for the title next season.

I always thought you'd win last night because of Citys defence but you were bloody lucky. If the City players could finish then you arent in the final.

Well chuffed with that result, made even sweeter with my 2 quid bet on 2-0 at 40/1. Whole team defended with everything they had. As said above though next game Luiz or Mustafi of both will probably lose the final with a stupid decision.

If you think the last two results are simply down to luck, then you can do one.

They showed much improvement and superb hard work to achieve.

it wouldn’t kill you to give teams other than Liverpool a bit of credit at times.

You can have all the ball but if you cannot finish it then you lose. Arsenal by far had the better chances. They could have been 3 nil up by the first half if it wasn't for Auba's terrible touch and hitting it directly at the keeper.

Arsenal were hanging on for the last 20 minutes but that's to be expected when you are 2-0 up to one of the most expensive teams in the world.

Managers are starting to realise that to go toe to toe with City is just not going to work. Playing out from the back and forcing the counter attack exposes them easily. United showed this 3 times already this season but Pep will never learn as he is stubborn.

I can do one? You need to take some time out fella.

Id say two massive mistakes leading to youre only two shots on target is a massive stroke of luck. If thats some sort of tactical genius from Arteta then lol. Citys players failing to hit the target from yards out was a masterstroke from Arteta though ill admit.

As for giving teams credit...i do regularly. I said Luiz played well yesterday but if you honestly think you didnt have a big stroke of luck in the past two weeks then youre deluded.

You had a stroke of luck on Tuesday not getting a man sent off, it goes both ways.

End of the day, we scored more than you, and more than city today. Therefore it’s two well deserved wins.

Yesterday, we had 4 shots and all four were on target with two goals, City had 16 shots with one on target and no goals, against Liverpool, we had 3 shots with 2 on target, you had 24 shots with just 8 on target, yet somehow we’re lucky to win. We won because the quality of the defending caused City and yourself to have trouble hitting the target, that’s how defending works.

Funny...this is after the Liverpool game :

It was undeserved, but still very satisfying.

Which is it?

Yesterday's game was reminiscent of innumerable Wenger v Mourinho showdowns, where Mourinho would set Chelsea up with a low block, Arsenal would have 70% of the ball and we'd fail to find a way through whilst being stung at the other end. People would believe Arsenal had played well, whereas in truth we'd have spent large proportions of the game unable to be effective and penetrate.

Against a low block you are always liable to have some chances: City had a couple of good ones, a couple of half chances and a whole lot of speculative low percentage efforts. The notion they "could have scored 6" is baffling. Arteta used his knowledge of City's weaknesses and entered the game with a clear plan and had drilled the team to deliver it. We scored two well-worked team goals, had another clear-cut chance and several moments where we should have been more effective on the counter attack. The most potent attacking team in the land spent the second half having to push the ball wide and try to deliver pinpoint crosses to two dwarves in the box. De Bruyne wasn't able to be effective. It was a thoroughly professional job that if it had been performed by D.Simeone would earn praise.

There was no luck about it. Possession doesn't equate to deserving to win a football match.
