Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [11th - 14th August 2023]

I too find it baffling the way the pundits are writing Newcastle off. They looked awesome yesterday.

Not really just the pundits, a lot more people have us wrote off. Only 7 people that posted on this forum expect us to get top 4, and 4 of them are Newcastle fans hah

It is however only the first week, and it'll be a looooooong season for us, the question will be can we last?

If you and us both do ok in Europe, it’s the top 5 now

Newcastle's (like most) season is 100% hinging on long term injuries.

I don't think we can afford more than 1 in most positions (general attack / mid / defence, not just a specific role within).

Yeah I was thinking this too - keep everyone fit and could have a great season. One or two key injuries and could easily drop down to midtable. Looked very good yesterday.

Of the teams i've watched so far, I think Newcastle is the one that is more coherent, even Man City I feel isn't at their top gear yet despite winning 3-0. Aston Villa looked really unfit, out of steam after 75mins.

Liverpool's midfield is still iffy, also Robertson looks really vulnerable today. Chelsea had more shots and more possession. But James going off is a big concern. Spurs looks really good, Bissouma looked really good in midfield. Not sure where the heck he came from, didn't see much of him last season but he showed great ball control today. Son looked tired and not very sharp, unfit to me. Don't remember him running at the defence or beat any defenders. Didn't cut in for a shot once.

We looked good first half, but then our old habit of taking our foot off the gas came back to haunt us. I don’t know why Arteta can’t cut that out.

If we had carried on like the first half, we’d have put 3 or 4 past Forest and it would have looked much more convincing. What happened just starts putting a bit of pessimism in your head

I did get flashbacks of last season's run-in when Forest scored! Game management, i guess it comes from experience.

It's only 1 game in, long way to go yet.

The scoreline doesn't tell the full story of the Brighton v Luton game, they'll nab some results this season if they play like yesterday. Given the amount of new players, I think scoring 4 is a pretty good outcome given they're not up to speed with the system.

I should have put a bet on Ferguson 20+ goals, think he's in for a good year.

I am fully expecting us to make a mess of things tomorrow night. Everyone is positive going into the season, so it's bound to go pear shaped early on :p

I didn’t watch but having +4xg from 27 shots is pretty damn good.
