Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 20th January 2025]

Just watched the highlights. Chuffed for Nunez, but Elliott - on for ten minutes and a massive hand in both goals. The impact he has off the bench so frequently is absurd

Injuries aren't helping Arsenal, but they do rely on Saka - without him they look pretty toothless.

There are plenty of question marks over whether Arteta can actually get them over the line, and the general refusal to sign a striker is quite bizarre. It's not simply a case of signing a top striker means they win the league, but it would certainly help... top strikers are at a premium though, there aren't many. I find it amusing they think Newcastle will simply just sell Isak to them...

Continually trying and failing to win the league takes a lot out of the players and the manager, so it's quite a big mountain to climb. Liverpool have far more experience in the areas that matter - Alisson, VVD and Salah for example.

Arteta has built a decent team but they might need someone better to actually win them the silverware. It's not easy though, Liverpool needed a manager of Klopp's calibre to get them over the line, and Arteta is nowhere near as good.

Think Baz maybe said it in the game against Forest, Jones coming on was the wrong decision and this would show that is likely

Maybe - they're slightly different. Jones is great at retaining the ball high up the pitch. Elliott is more direct. We improved drastically once Jones came on against Forest. Whether Elliott would have changed the game who knows. I like them both, and think they offer slightly different things to each other.

I'm not sure if it was Klopp or Ljinders who said it but one of them made the point re how switched on he is when he's on the bench - he's not somebody that just sits there waiting to get a call and be given instructions but somebody that's following the game and it shows in his performances off the bench. It's not something that's often talked about in relation to midfielders but his movement is so good, always finding little pockets of space in and around the box, which is so important when you're playing against a deep defence.

I hope I'm wrong but I think it's clear Slot doesn't fancy him. I suspect it's a physicality thing, not helped by the fact Mac Allister's one of your other midfielders - you don't really want 2 of your 3 midfielders being 5 foot 7 and not being able to run.

Does seem to be several rumours floating about that he will be sold, which is a real shame if so

I wonder what sort of United we'll see today...

We played poorly for the most part and were rescued by individual magic.

Not that Southampton were poor but you have to assume Brighton will ask more questions.

Who knows what will happen, our league form isn't great, but recent years we mostly get a result against United in the league.

Injuries all over the shop, but hopefully still able to field a strong enough team today. We have a lot of depth, but never manage to have a consistent team at the moment.

Maguire in for Martinez, Yoro keeps his place (hope he has a better game today) and Zirkzee starts ahead of Højlund. Amad back at #10.

Maybe today we’ll get a more cohesive performance, but probably not :p

Be interested to see how Zirkzee does. I think he might be better as a sub still.

I reckon Yoro will be fine. It was just a bad night and he’ll shake it off.

Welbeck going to score he loves scoring against us haha

I like having Maguire in the team never thought id say that again after his horror show of a while ago, but he putting in shifts.

Sutton really doesn't like United does he? What's the backstory there?

Savage isn't a fan either.

Not that I'm expecting either or any person to be a fan but you do get some bitter people out there don't you?

And to counter that, Stone is the opposite end of the scale.
