Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 21st August 2023]

Thought it was soft but the crowd did their job and swayed the ref. Whatever though, Palace didn’t deserve anything and if you’re going to practice disciplined parking of the proverbial bus, do it when you’re holding out for a win. Think this season will be one step back before we step forward again though - have to work on being an effective squad not just a team and get proficient at new set-ups - but hopefully results can be ground out in the meantime.

One of the softest reds I've seen.

This "8 second time-wasting" however I think you just need to keep it in the context of the total time to take the throw-in, if the team is deemed to be wasting time then whomever is holding the ball gets booked, tough luck even if someone else wasted more time. Otherwise you could just have a chain of people passing the ball off to each other none of them holding it for 10s.

In my experience goal kicks are one of the worst time-wasting scenarios, but refs are typically a bit wary of booking keepers especially a second yellow. They kind of know they get a bit of leeway if they are already booked and waste more time. What needs to happen is more first half yellows for time wasting, I've lost count of the number of times I've seen teams at the Emirates dragging out goalkicks from very early on.

What do people make of Karen Carney on MNF? It feels a bit stretched now compared to the Carragher+Neville dynamic, which I quite liked. Some of their new analysis stuff is really dull too.

Her comments around women's football seem to have gone down like a lead balloon. Asking for all club sponsorship money to be split 50/50 between the men and women's teams doesn't really follow any logic.

There isn't a single sponsor in the world that would agree to that, it's just throwing 50% of their money away.

They might deserve it one day but the quality of football, crowd sizes and general interest doesn't warrant it currently.

I get the impression Carra/Nev can't argue with her at risk of being labelled sexist or whatever they call it nowadays. She comes out with some trash, though, Leeds only got promoted a few years back due to Covid, and Mitoma is the best winger she's ever seen? I think there are better female pundits out there, unfortunately, she just doesn't have any chemistry for that program at all. Is she permanent on MNF?!!

If Women demand equal pay with men then give equal pay to the National League North/South because that is their level. That is also being a little harsh to the national league as I am not really sure what is below that?

There is a reason why there is less money in the national league.

This is kind of at the heart of the debate. Do you pay them based on their relative level or their absolute level? Do you pay them based on where you want them to be or where they are commercially.

I understand the argument that you have to put money into womens sport or it will never reach its potential but I also don't believe that womens sport will ever attract the same level of attention and bring in the same revenues as mens because its fundamentally nowhere near the same quality.

It will certainly be interesting to see where womens pay is in 10 years. Will there be players on £10m/year?

Average attendance is around 6k per game i think and the cost of tickets is massively reduced too. There's your reason for pay disparity, there just isn't the interest yet. It's years behind and needs to grow organically not be forced like they are trying to do now.

Yes, they were both sat there looking a bit frustrated and confused while she prattled on. I totally understand she's passionate about women's football and would like a massive investment, but it's completely unrealistic.

I remember the Leeds incident :p I don't mind her too much but she brings nothing to the show, it does feel a bit like a box ticking exercise from Sky. That said, it did feel like she was having a bit of a whinge about the finance stuff.

It looks like she's a permanent fixture, unfortunately. People aren't happy.

There's also the fact that women aren't generally as into football, or even sport, as men. You aren't going to fill massive stadiums every week and bring in millions of viewers with women's football.

A large part of football for many fans is the culture (down the pub etc), it's very much a 'man' thing in that respect.

It all feels very forced to me, the growth and demand just isn't there, it probably won't ever be.

Carney is awful on MNF. Compared to Carra and Nev, her remarks just sound like she hasn’t got a clue. She said something to Hodgson that forced him into a mocking laugh.

Dont mind her as a guest now and then, but I will struggle to suffer her every time. MNF is probably the best football programme sky has left, and they’re ruining it and the dynamics between Carra and Nev.

It feels incredibly forced to me. The Neville-Carragher MNF is iconic in itself. WHY have they included another member of the cast? They have had guests in the past, but this just feels like the shows dynamic has shifted and lost it's way now.

I wouldn't just say that the analysis is dull but it's also feels really cringey. Everyone knows why she's on the show with Sky's new direction, for me it doesn't work.

As soon as I started reading your post I knew you were going to bring up the covid thing :D It was a shocking take but Leeds fans have got to let it go.

Jill Scott did a bit with Nev, Carra and Keane and she fit into the dynamic quite well, taking part in the banter and not making things awkward or rambling on, unable to articulate a point.

There are better personalities for MNF, it has nothing to do with gender as there are plenty of male pundits who've been terrible as guests.

Neville was quite serious and a bit awkward when he first started, so she may improve over time, but I think her starting point is much lower.
