Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [1st - 3rd September 2023]

Said to my Arsenal fan work colleague yesterday before the game we was going to lose, didnt expect a win yesterday I thought we gave it a decent shot we are far from ready to challenge the big boys (just look how bare we are when we get injurys), decisions go for and against in a match just the way it is, we have to dust down and come back stronger.

Look on the bright side we are still above Newcastle just :D

We're clearly doing something right if all the chat is about us again. Strikes the fear into the lesser clubs (yes I'm living in the past with this comment).

I thought offsides were done by the computer?

When they did that segment on Sky Sports a while back, they said that lines are determined and put on screen by the official, and the computer then says offside or onside based on that.

So still open to interpretation in a way, as the official can decide if a nose hair or overgrown finger nail is a part of the body that can be scored with so to draw the line there

I still think it’s daft the head or arms can determine whether a player is offside or not. Yes I know you can score with your head but athletes will always run or move off from a stand still with their bodies leaning forward, so they need to measure it by foot placement. I’m probably alone in that but given how many goals are marked off these days for stupidly small margins, it seems a bit OTT. You almost can’t celebrate goals these days because you have to wait for the inevitable VAR check first

Not quite. The VAR will mark the furthest forward point of both the attacker and defender (they can, if needed, do a bit of trial and error to make sure they have the furthest forward point) and then the lines are plotted by the system.

As for what parts of the body can be used - it's any part of the body that can legally play the ball. Basically any part of the body barring 3/4's of the arm*. Despite what it might seem from camera angles not in-line, the Utd goal wasn't particularly close to being onside. There was clear day light between the two lines and even had the edges of the two lines been touching, it would have meant he was 5-10cm offside anyway**.

*Due to the difficulty in determining whether contact around the shoulder was handball or not, handball only counts from the shirt sleeve line. And no they don't measure it from the actual shirt sleeve but it's approx a third of the way down from the shoulder to the elbow.

**When the two lines are touching they give the benefit of the doubt to the forward and award the goal to allow for a margin of error in the technology.

This is going to be no different to the refs on Sky etc backing their mates. "In this case we can see my mate Paul making the correct decision" No chance they actually make a genuine explanation, it will just be PR to help their image.

What would make a good show is a referee that left the organisation under a cloud and wants to stick the knife in, throw doubt onto literally every remotely controversial decision :p

I see a lot of comments around Maguire and Evans in this thread, put some respect on their names!!!!11

If you look at the history of all the MU squad, and ask yourself, of all the clubs they've played for, which club won the Premier League most recently? Leaving aside Mount, for most of them, it will be Manchester United, over 10 years ago.
Not so Maguire and Evans, they have a club on their CV that won it as recently as 2016!
