Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [1st - 3rd September 2023]

Gabriel is on his feet after the challenge ends, he then trips over Hojlund. What clip are you watching lol. Please post a screenshot of Hojlund dragging Gabriel to the ground. You can quite clearly see at the end that he's not holding him at all.
"After the challenge ends" Now I know you are trolling

Best performance of the season? You had a goal due to an assist from Havertz, outside of that Arsenal have dominated every stat. Only times United looked a threat was on the break which didn't happen much at all.
It can still be their best performance of the season, if they have a low bar to begin with :) Maybe they've been crap in their other games.
Personally I thought they offered little in the first half, a counter goal by Rashford and not much else.

It's like when Man City beat Arsenal 6-3 a few years back, it was described as a thrashing but I thought it was a decent performance by Arsenal. Looking back at the stats now, Arsenal had 48% possession at the Etihad with 1 less shot on target and the same number of corners. We were also robbed of two goals/pens from what I recall.

Ok, like last week it's clear that certain posters aren't going to agree on the decision so it's probably best leaving it there.

Best performance of the season?

You obviously haven't watched us play in the past three games. G Nev said the same thing that it was our best performance so far.

This game could have quite easily been a United victory away to Arsenal with a makeshift back 4 with a 35 year old Evans.

Arsenal are the defacto title chasers to City this season. I would say it was a more worrying display by themselves considering they were home and basically full strength. The game could have gone either way in the end and Manchester United are by far miles away from being the final product. We are top 4 challengers at best. Not title chasers like Arsenal are.

Frustrating game yesterday, our best half of the season and it wasn't rewarded. Such a shame about Garnacho's goal.

I don't know why people find it so hilarious that ETH could be under pressure. Let's be honest, as good as last season was in comparison to the previous few, he fluffed his lines big time in the last third of the season. We were pretty lucky to come away with Champions League football with the results we were having. Yes he won a trophy, but again, his latter season form was bad, and it seems to have carried in to this season. Transfers have been a bit...hit and miss so far. I do not see Mount being anything but a flop, Onana looks to have been a great buy and Hojlund will be a long term buy which I'm sure will pay off, but he's not going to be scoring a lot this season. Our squad still looks like it's in need of a lot of players, and that's without the injuries.

If we don't start playing convincing football and getting results soon, then absolutely ETH should be considered very much under pressure. I'd say if we were the Utd of old, then no, but we've proved ourselves to be trigger happy with managers in the last decade so we shouldn't expect it to be different now
I think this is bonkers. I'm not a United fan, but your improvement under ETH is clear. He's the first manager since Ferguson who appears to have had an idea about how you want to play and what you're aiming to achieve, and to be buying players towards that. What he's doing reminds me a lot of what Arteta did in his first season at Arsenal. It's totally different to United under Solskjaer or Rangnick, which was a complete mess. ETH will get results, but it will take time to transition towards them. The other option is another attempted short term fix, and they've got you nowhere over the last decade.

Cliffy you just walked straight into 'pot/kettle' territory? :p

Yesterday was united's best performance of the season so far... but like many things we have to hold it in context. And yes Arsenal are the defacto (by definition of Arsenal's position last season, the challenge and bolstering the squad the summer) challengers to city until the season gets fleshed out with enough meaningful performances for people to start evaluating where they believe the season will go...

Regarding ETH for those usual voices that love to come out after a bad result.... Are United at their best of last season at this point. No. However much like last season United have seen a dip as soon as injuries hit our starting 11. Any fan or football watcher (who isn't baiting with snap comments) can see they're progressing in moving the squad to a standard with which the managers philosophy can be implemented and is a project that still has another 2-3 years til it's supposed to come to fruition.

Everything else is media baiting, opposition fans who like to find any form of dig from week to week or United fans who have a sense of entitlement and who under value the time it takes to change the culture, standards and performances at a club which has been mismanaged (And we're talking the directors/CE/Owners) for over a decade.

Both got hold of each other, six of one half a dozen of the other

Hojlund is past him and Gabriel is dragging him back. Hojlund's only contact with him is on the arm that is holding him, you can't possibly suggest that is 50:50
If that was outside the box you wouldnt be spitting feathers over it

Its a 50/50 tussle in the box they are grabbing parts of each other

VAR or not, he's never getting awarded that whilst tugging the opposing players arm and falling to the floor so readily.

So if someone grabs you you aren't allowed to try and get free? Since when? What are players supposed to do in that situation then? Funny that both incidents have Gabriel grabbing a player and not playing the ball in either and both were missed by VAR

But you know it wasn’t a clear and obvious error and if it happened up the other end, you’d be steadfastly defending it as a 50/50. To say you’d be screaming for an Arsenal penalty would be laughable
We've had penalties that were given against us that did far less than this. Even rival fans on r/soccer are saying it's stonewall.

VAR didn't even check it, how can that possibly be right?

Hojlund grabs Gabriels arm and pulls it towards him before Gabriels arm ends up wrapped around Hojlund.

It's about as 50/50 as you're likely to see.
Watch it again, Gabriel throws his arm across him to grab him first, then Hojlund grabs his arm. Hojlund doesn't pull his arm across at all, that is nonsense.

Defenders will use their body and try to get in front of forwards all the time and I'm struggling to think when a penalty has ever been given. Gabriel was probably pushing the limits of what's acceptable but then again we saw the incident with Martinez(?) vs Spurs where he's not ahead of the forward and leaned into him but full on barged him and he gt away with it.
