Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [8th - 10th March 2025]

OK but what against the better teams? Brighton, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Palace. Lost to them at OT recently.

True it's the best way to get results , I remember ten hag did the same was very defensive and grinded out results for a spell

Not sure why Amorim was apologising for playing the low block today (I guess this is what I meant by he should try something different).

It wasn't pretty but it nearly worked, against a team that were scoring for fun in their last match.

I'm with Roy on this one, he should employ the tactic more often, as and when required. Surely everyone would rather win like this (in the short term) rather than lose or draw against other teams.

Sure, once he gets his players and squad then he can play how he wants but until then (years away?) he should not be afraid to repeat what he did today. SAF played on the counter also didn't he, and towards the end (when Scholes (autocorrected to Achilles, lol) left) the performances weren't great were they?

We're miles away from peak United so it's time to knuckle down and grind out wins, else I'm not sure he'll be in a job in 18 months time, surely if he finishes 14th next season they'll boot him out?
This is why they should have got Southgate in as he’s an expert at the low block, I’m certain they would be higher up the table than they currently are.

That's not good for the long term though and we can't keep swapping managers.

My general point is about Amorim adapting, and he did today, which is good. Admittedly I've not seen enough matches to know if he's done this many times in the past, the results suggest not. Although even with a low block Dalot or Onana will give the opposition a free goal, so there are no guarantees.

David Moyes turned Everton around, got average players grinding out results, let's bring him back

Can't believe we didn't beat Arsenal today. Had plenty of chances to put it to bed. A better forward than Hojlund and we would have comfortably won that.
A bit harsh. Bruno and Mazraoui chances were easier than the two that Rasmus had but he's still sucks ass atm.

I think the spirit in the team is better than it was. We are showing a bit more fight despite a stunning lack of quality from most of the team. Our luck also doesn't seem to be in. Raya made a couple of good saves that I'm not sure he knew much about. Pleased with what I've seen from Heaven, Yoro and De Ligt. That could be our most used back three in the next couple of seasons.
Considering the amount of players we have that are unavailable then we have shown a bit of character. Onto Thursday.

Not to mention they were probably tired after last match too, always feels worse when you're defending a lot

Moyes was unlucky as he had the impossible job of succeeding Fergie but had he come in now with expectations much lower he’d probably end up a success.

That said, some good business in the summer and finding an identity then things can change fast, just look at Forest this season.

Southgate is crap shouldn't be anywhere near managing top club , that sort of play style isn't gonna work long term

Cant quite understand some of the revisionist commentary that I saw last night and read this morning against Declan Rice. Apparently this performance was on par with Bobby Moore's in escape victory he was THAT good. Great celebration in front of the Stretford End as well like he'd won the world cup. Prob the closest he will get.

I've got no problem with Amorim and the low block. Clearly he doesn't have the midfielders who can maintain posession for lengthy periods of the game so, needs must I guess.

I think its because he is a striker. That should be his bread and butter. You need your strikers to be able to put the ball in the net. A RB and your CM perhaps not so much. Realistically Hojlund shouldn't be leading our line but thats not his fault, thats the clubs fault. I'm sure that if we start playing better as a team he will be fine next season. The question is whether the club buys a top striker in the summer or hopes that fixing the rest of the problems will give Hojlund what he needs to come back into some form.

If you see all the goals that Gyokores was scoring under Amorim, most of them were super high xG changes. He wasn't being asked to score low percentage chances.

I read some clickbait about Kane looking to move

Don't know why he would. Hes got an easy life at Bayern and will be competing for the big trophies for the rest of his career which at this point is probably another 3-4 years. Coming to United wouldn't make any sense and the amount he would cost us and his age doesn't make sense for us either. If hes not happy in Germany or his partner isn't then perhaps that could trigger it.

Quite a subdued game with very few chances. A.ways find the crowd noise here odd, there’s just a murmur around the place that rarely seems to get louder.
Kudus the real danger man for them but Newcastle had the most of the ball without really creating much. Livramento getting loads of the ball down the left hand side but doing very little with it, presume Howe has told Barnes to come on the inside for it. It’s not working though.
Ref not falling for Bruno’s antics so far but I think he’s been the pick of our players although that’s not saying much.

Pretty toothless first half. Newcastle always struggle against a low-block. We never seem to have that creative spark to find the gaps that the best teams are capable of doing.

Livramento playing out of position doesn’t help but it’s so obvious. Every time he gets to the corner he has to slow things down to get it on his right foot.

And it’s clear Barns has been out for a while.

Liverpool certainly won’t be worried based on that first-half performance.

Loads more pressure from West Ham this second half. We look fragile and need a goal, not sure where that’s coming from. Need Murphy in the game more.
