Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 11th January 2015]

Always so satisfying when Manchester United lose, mmmmmmm.

As always looked disgracefully bad at the back. Very little penetration or creativity up front. A deserved win for the Saints.

blindly ignoring the three mata chances that really should have been scored.

Don't get me wrong , Southampton deserved the goal - but they were pretty fortunate not to concede at least two

If you don't have a shot on target you don't deserve a win. Your finishing was bad, that does not make Southampton fortunate.

I'm sure Brendan Rodgers remembers -

Somewhere at the end of the season I want to see a brilliant round up of Rodgers quotes that went back to bite him in the ass. He constantly says stuff about other clubs just to look like a complete fool months later when he does the same. Pool sell Suarez which apparently is a choice and were on course for the CL again if he stayed... opps.

The one against Spurs and basically laughing at Spurs for being stupid and buying multiple players all in one window. There are a decent number of hugely opinionated things he's said which have only over time made him look utterly stupid, he's great :p

fitness concerns - as he has only had one sub appearance (against Yoevil in the FA Cup) since being injured for how ever many weeks

He wasn't exactly stellar when he got the ball deep either today....

He's a phenomenal crosser of the ball, brilliant passer and great at running with pace and we play him off the last man? It literally makes no sense playing him there at all. Bizarre.

That 30 second thing is a rough guide. As I said, most matches have similar amounts of subs and more goals without 5 minutes being added..

What makes this one wrong , and the other matches right?

The 30 sec/sub is a guide, which means its a reasonable adjustment to make

5 minutes added on in a half where little to nothing happened was an obscene amount. Even when you use the 30 second guide you only get 3 minutes.

As you said you weren't paying attention - there were enough free kicks and "messing around" to add another two minutes (which really isn't that much anyway)

If you blindly accept stats (which can be made to read any way you want) then maybe....

I know, but stats never tell the real story.

While that is true - given the fact we are now in the 2nd half of the season (they have therefore played everyone at least once), its a fair reflection of their abilities

They can handle all different types of attacking players and perform well - not sure whether they will stay in the top four but certainly top 6 would be incredible and fully deserved.

This one was wrong because there were no major incidents and fairly regulation stoppages. There was just 2 minutes added in the Arsenal - Stoke game which had 3 subs and a goal as well as more fouls and other stoppages too. The only times you see 5+ minutes added are usually when there's been a big injury, 4/5 goals or another major incident that stopped the game for a period.

I wasn't paying complete attention but enough to make me question where the 5 minutes came from and as yet I've seen nobody come up with anything to justify it. I thought I must have missed a big injury or something because 5 minutes was way ott.

The only thing that matters in you deserving a win is the scoreline or if the ref had an influence on it. It was 1-0 and the ref didn't, therefore deserved nothing

In fact he assisted you by allowing Smalling to take out one player every corner/set piece

So here we are, halfway through the season and... I am struggling to see what Van Gaal's 'philosophy' is supposed to be? I mean, we don't play good possession football, we don't play quick counter-attacking football, we barely create any chances, we are defensively laughable, what is this 'philosophy' supposed to be? Playing a 3 at the back formation that looks **** every time it's played and then playing pointless and ponderous football... is this a 'footballing philosophy'? I know that results have been a bit better than last season but have we actually played well this season at all? Even one game? We're still awful which, considering the money that has been spent and the squad we've got, is just not good enough.
