Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 12th August 2018]

A win in the bag for Utd but not an entirely convincing one - where they'd have been without being gifted a penalty in the first 2 minutes by a defender who hadn't woken up yet would have been interesting. Both the other goals were quite scabby really, not a lot of quality on show from either side in front of goal.

De Gea slightly at fault for the late goal (flat footed a little ?) but given the save from Maddison earlier in the game (not to mention multiple other performances) at least Utd get 3 points

really happy for Luke Shaw to get his first senior goal - and after a terrible first touch.

Utd were poor for most of the game and some of the new guys need to really learn fast, but Andreas and Fred did ok, Mata was pretty invisible and no service at all to Alexis and Rashford in the 1st hour - still completely annoyed that lumbering oaf is still in the squad/ team

Pretty fair but remember Utd are still without 1/2 of what JM considers to be first team for most of the match

Young, Valencia, Matic and lingard all who would have helped controll the game more let alone Lukaku who only played 20 odd minutes (without taking into account that Utd wouldn't have sat back as much without the early goal)

Any else abit confused when Martin Tyler( i think) said the world cup had reignited peoples interest in football? Maybe he meant international football but i am sure he just said football. I am more excited for the start of the prem than i was for world cup tbh so his comment is lost on me.

I won't be bothered about international again until the Euros start(not qualifiers).

Wasn't the most convincing of wins for Man Utd but it's 3 points. Hopefully Shaw can start to get his career back on track and Pogba showed a bit of his actual promise. I thought Sanchez was a bit crap though, I expect a lot more from him.

Well after all the pre-season hand ringing things are finally underway and with some good signs for United supporters. Given all the anti-hype and circumstance a home win against a decent opponent when you don't play particularly well is not to be sniffed at. Its the sort of thing that you have to be capable of to contend for a league title. In case any of the naysayers need reminding - scintillating Liverpool drew 12 matches last season, Mighty City won 9 times by 1 goal. What will be difficult to stomach is if United don't show a degree more cohesion as the season develops and players regain match fitness. Whilst I FFWD a bit of the match this morning it looked like Fred has promise if he and Pogba can develop any sort of understanding. Pogba is hard to predict for opposition but also I should imagine his own team. I remember Louis Saha being similar but when people got on his wavelength he had 1.5 excellent seasons.

Mourinho torments me. I admire his drive for higher and higher standards but i think some perspective is required. With Wenger exiting we have reached the end of the era where managers have any time or forgiveness in order to build a team. Therefore it is hardly surprising that his behaviour is as it is. He is a winner and it will burn in him that he has never failed to win league title with any of his charges. I think it's to his credit that he has brought on Rashford, McTominay and most impressively Lingard. Lingard stands out but he is quite a bit older so lets not fret about the under 21. It is however hard to fathom how he has failed to find a decent and reliable wing back for three seasons and hasn't manufactured a fulcrum in central defence. Lindelof still looks second tier to me. Personally I think he has too much choice in some areas and more exits were required but lets wait and see if he can get any sort of trick out of Sanchez. If he can then United will be there or thereabouts.

THe thing I really don't get is, Sanchez was constantly crap for Arsenal. He got goals but, hell even before we signed him I said ultimately he plays a bit like Walcott. he wastes time on the ball, he doesn't achieve much out of the box, but you play him into the box to shoot on his first or second touch or the ball drops to him in/around the box where he can shoot first time and he's a completely different class to Walcott. Unlike Walcott he does love to dribble but most of the time he loses the ball doing it (same as Walcott there just that WAlcott's also a giant vagina and passes backwards/sideways rather than actually try to beat players 9/10 times). He's exceptionally wasteful, selfish, often slows down plays with his insistence on dribbling and he throws himself to the ground A LOT. I said all this before he joined Arsenal in describing how he plays and I said it throughout his time with us.

He can still be effective because given those chances without much to think about he's 100 times better than Walcott at finishing but he brought more to the team in goal scoring and assists (on a similar thinking, give him the ball to cross or pass without thinking in a position where that can turn into an assist and he's good, dribble 20 yards then pass.... not so much).

At Arsenal you had a slow fairly useless striker who was used as a backboard for passes, this worked for Sanchez, give Giroud the ball on the edge of the box and pass sideways for Sanchez to run onto and hit, or have Sanchez come in on end of a cross like Freddie or Pires. With Utd you have more players who like to keep the ball, a striker who can run with the ball and is dangerous from more positions and other players who are effective and Sanchez is being asked to play more of a support role for the striker rather than at Arsenal being the guy being supported by the striker and other attackers.

Sanchez was always massively flattered by his goal scoring at Arsenal, his general play was monumentally over rated and him getting something stupid close to 400k a week is beyond crazy.

Utd are stuck with him, no one will take him off Utd's hands with that kind of wage. There is a reason Guardiola saw no point in offering him silly money or a huge transfer fee.

What are your thoughts on our new manager at arsenal? upgrade on Wenger? will we do well against city tomorrow?

Honestly no clue, he's done well previously but I think there were two massive issues at Arsenal, mentality and squad. Can a new manager fix the mentality of a lot of players who then come good or are some of those players too used to how things were and won't change?

I don't think we'll do well against City most likely, in general a new manager will take time to impose their style on a team and almost no managers take over from a 20+ year manager. There is a lot to overcome. Think Poch bringing new training and methods to Spurs but it took pretty much 18 months till everything clicked together to work as a new team than all of a sudden they looked like a completely different side.

I'm happy and fine for a while of improving and players adjusting to change. I hoped we'd move on more players and bring in more players to replace them as I think some players are very unlikely to become good enough but unlike Spurs we had a lot of people on higher wages and longer contracts making it more difficult to make such big changes. I hope after 12 months the manager highlights players he thinks aren't adapting and aren't good enough and next summer we get a very targeted summer of people who need to be pushed out and some longer term planning on replacements, finding some good cheap youngsters, and getting some really good value deals done that time can help make happen.

Actually buying a competent defensive midfielder is a huge step though. Mostly under Wenger we were predictable, I expected no change year to year, I had no faith we could improve so I had no hope when watching us screw up yet another lead, etc. Under Emery I have hope we can improve so for the first time in literally 7+ years I have some actual excitement to see Arsenal improve. It's not that they will it's that they might, and under Wenger having the knowledge they wouldn't made watching them just not enjoyable any more.

My early belief from seeing Silva's work at Hull and watford made me think he could be the next Poch and the guy I'd really like to see at Arsenal.

If he can do similarly for Everton, that is buy well, improve both the offence, defence and mentality while bringing a good style of football then I'll be sad we didn't get him when he was available but also thinking if he can do it again at Everton, if Emery isn't the guy to build up a team at Arsenal then he could be the guy to go for.
