Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 13th March 2012]

Ruining it for the internet

I like Lee Dixson, he's quite easy to not listen to if he's being boring. Hanson has a voice that hurts.

Whilst watching the Leeds game today, I understand Lallana and Lambert being up for player of the year but Whittingham over Snodgrass is ridiculous. Snodgrass has one more goal (11) and both have same assists (11) but Snoddy has been playing on the RW majority of season in a poorer side. Whittingham's majority of goals comes from pen.

Silly decision.

Wanted to rant, falls on deaf ears on most in here (like it will you next season :p)

That nob you had come on around 80th minute missed pretty much an open net and screwed up two outnumbered attacks very well

should have his wages docked tbh

heard about it, wad in bed, went Leeds for saturday night and was coming back on train, was so rough got home and had a few hours kip at 4

Rooney this year:

-20 goals in 24 league matches
-26 goals in 31 matches overall

So average it hurts. :(

It's a fantastic goal return without doubt but unlike the Arsenal fans with RVP I'll admit Rooney was gash against Spurs and Bilbao but still scored 3 goals and like RVP that's what the best strikers do.... have a mare and yet still score vital goals. By all accounts Rooney wasn't great today either (in regards to his passing)

Haha! The player of the year things are weird, never quite based on the best evidence/form ratio. I'm guessing Snodgrass wasn't up for it for overall form and I was a little surpassed Lallana was up for it. Lallana has been very erratic with his form over christmas (injury mostly) and hasn't really looked player of the year.

Lambert is the best player in the league either way so it's all ok ;) (we'll be fending off interest from other teams by christmas when everyone understands it)

Next season is going to be weird on here, most people are going to have to watch us once in a while, might even get the highlights properly watched on motd!

Annoyed about the manager of the season award, no idea why Poyet was up and not Adkins!

Yep, Torres looked barely interested most of the time, then gets the one chance he needs.

Think you'll find a lot of Arsenal fans and certainly me have not been with the fawning press over RVP. For me, he has scored a lot more "good" goals than Rooney, and he drops deep and is far more effective with his passing and interplay, but a lot of his goals are just tap ins, created for him. Some are more ackward, he's scored a couple of blinding "tap ins" but that were also very difficult angles, or poorly crossed(not a surprised with Gervinho/Walcott) behind him or some other thing.

His "football" hasn't been anywhere near previous seasons but that is because he's playing a different role.

When he comes deep his play is good, his passing is great and his vision in trying to play others in is great.

When Rooney drops deep(which he does a heck of a lot more) he mostly looks crap. As you said the games listed he's scored loads while being largely crap for the majority of the game. However when you look at his scoring record its incredibly good this year in terms of who he has scored against. Relatively few games because he's scored 2 or 3 so often. But he's scored against, Arsenal in two games, Pool, Chelsea, City, this year he's barely scored against a small team and has scored important goals in big games.

He's having a better year, I consider him an average football, above average striker... WHEN he plays as a striker but he consistently tries to play in Scholes/Lampard role. Over his career he's only had two very good striking years for me, this and 2 years ago. There are lots of strikers who have managed consistently higher scoring over the past 5 or 10 years, and there are a lot of strikers scoring at a similar rate to Rooney... who have a much more effective all around game also.

Not sure how many penalties he or RVP have had this year, though from memory Rooney has taken a buttload and not scored as many as he should.

Either way, I think Rooney and RVP are doing better than they should in terms of goals scored, largely due to how awful the defences both have played against have been.

I mean there isn't a year since 2000 that Chelsea would have opened up for Arsenal they way they have done this year, even on their worst game.

Both RVP and Rooney are being helped by a much worse than normal year.

its pretty funny, he's scored 7 goals in the past 4 prem games against, Pool, Chelsea, Spurs and West brom and I think he's been fairly pap in all of them, such is life.

Fact is stats and scoring are only part of the equation, sometimes a crap striker will score 30 goals, sometimes a great one will not score all season.

I still don't think Rooney is a particularly good footballer, he can be an effective striker, but a shedload of Rooney's goals I think (other than the ability to be right place right time a lot) most other strikers could/would have scored most of them.

I think, but I can't quite remember, that this came from a column that Neville did. People will say he's biased but I think he's shown since being a pundit that he's actually very good & fair.

Just another view on it all anyway:

EDIT: Yeah, it was from a Daily Mail article he wrote.

Not entirely convinced City's derby game should be red - on City's list(Im not writing off Utd's chances, I just think it should be an amber in respect to their unblemished home record this season) . On Utd's chart, it should definitely be red though.

(remember this is just as much about psychology of the players, as it is about stats etc - City should be confident about beating anyone who arrives at the Etihad after winning every EPL game this season)

Over Xmas I dont think many Utd fans expected the team to lose 6 points from the games they did, so Im not entirely convinced there is any logic or reason to predicting what is an easy game or isnt - it would be just like Utd to get their noses ahead only to do something retarded like lose all three against Wolves or something, while Chelsea capitulate a few days later against City.......

The crux of your arguement seens to be the delivery into rooney has been too good , and he doesnt have to do much to score them .....yeah ok, Im sure thats what SAF thinks too lol

RvP misses a lot of goals too (in most highlight reels you hear pundits saying "he should have bagged that one" etc) - but he still usually comes up trumps later on - believe it or not , not even Messi is perfect -Im sure he still messes up what would be considered easy chances for him.

8th highest premier league goal scorer of all time.

Messi missed a few sitters last night, and who would say RvP has had a bad game when he never does

Not too optimistic about tonight, can see Newcastle getting a draw. Just need to avoid a loss.

Fergie could at least tuck his shirt in.

I hope City win the league, couldn't stomach the smug Man Utd fans if they win the league.

I'll be glad when this season is over, our (LFC) season is going horribly wrong, very quickly.

I'm amazed you managed to find an overriding point from DM latest post at tbh. Seemed to be one of his long posts that you imagine has to have an underlining point but doesn't

I should have just let him argue with himself

Here's to the "average" Rooney getting 30+ league goals this season:)

as much as it will all be a bit *meh* if united win it, it's not as bad as the awful alternative of city winning it.

Pretty much how i feel, id rather see Utd winning the EPL than City who have been trying to buy the title with their recent signings ie over the past couple of years. Much like Chelsea a few yrs ago, i was actually hoping that Utd would win the title rather than them.

Tbh i really dont care in the grand scheme of things if Utd or City win the EPL but ill take the lesser of the 2 evils and put my money on Utd to bag the title again.
