Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 14th January 2014]

Gerrard just said Rodgers will be playing him as the holding midfielder from now on...

Lack of faith in Lucas or shoehorning Gerrard in to the team? Either way it's very concerning.

Think it's more getting his name on sheet though gerrard has just come back so maybe he will do well there in next couple matches well I hope, I am surprised we haven't signed any one yet though especially with Rodgers wanting it done early

I've got no problem with him playing that position if he plays it simple, stops bringing it forward and leaving the space behind him and controls the tempo better. Problem is Lucas has the attributes to play that role better and has essentially become redundant overnight.

Rodgers though will probably realise after couple games that Lucas can't do attacking midfield role as carragher pointed out and as we know he has no attitributes that would help him do that.

What a ridiculous game of football which we won despite the best efforts of Rodgers.

I've said for a while that Rodger's makes some bizarre decisions, like starting Gerrard behind Lucas in a game like today. If these bizarre decisions weren't bad enough, his reluctance to change things when it's clear that plan A isn't working is inexcusable. Today reminded me so much of the game away to Arsenal last season when we played Suarez left and despite going 2-0 up, it was clear that Arsenal were causing us so many problems down our left, yet it was only when it went to 2-2 (with both goals coming down our left) that Rodgers changed things.

On the penalty, people can call it soft and there was minimal contact all they like - Wilson(?) puts his leg across Sterling, catches him and doesn't get near the ball. It's a foul. It's the sort of challenge that officials usually bottle inside the box but give 99 times out of 100 when it's outside the area.

Thank Fowler that we've got Suarez.

edit: Oh and 1 hour of shooting practice every day for Coutinho. When (not if) he starts scoring, he's going to be a superstar.

I agree with Baz on the penalty, outside the box it's given but people call it a soft penalty. The defender put his leg across him and then shoved him in the back after already failing to get the ball. He probably could have stayed on his feet but he went to ground looking for the penalty and got it.

Not sure if you watched Gerrard's post match interview but he said that's the position Rodgers sees him playing now.

If that's true then we've surely given up playing possession football and will look to capitalise on our pace upfront by getting the ball forward as quick as possible so more like Real than Barcelona. Certainly need a pacier player like Mascherano sat alongside him, as you've said before, if we play that way.

Only just listened to what he said - he said Rodgers sees him playing there more often rather than exclusively which is a relief.

Anyway with Sturridge back we're going to go back to the 4-4-2/4-3-3 hybrid with Henderson narrow on one side and 2 sitting so I'm not overly concerned as he'll have somebody alongside him.

The only way I'd play Gerrard in the holding role in a straight 4-3-3 is when we're at home to somebody like Norwich and we have both Henderson and Allen ahead of him. Playing Lucas ahead of him is just bizarre. Today we needed a defensive player in the holding role and not only is Lucas far better than Gerrard defensively, he's far less effective in the advanced role than Gerrard is.

The M'Vila stories are starting to gather pace again. Him + one of Gerrard or Lucas (depending on the opposition) in the 4-4-2/4-3-3 hybrid looks a lot better.

They have? All I've seen is reports in Italy claiming both us and Napoli have had loan moves rejected but that we're both still in for him and he'd rather come to England.

SaS are back ;)
