Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 14th January 2020]

On reflection, I agree, it is the handball rule. It’s stupid. I thought that from the moment Utd were awarded that penalty against PSG last year.

Utd's penalty vs PSG had nothing to do with this new handball law. Utd's penalty was the same old handball law as we've had for years, which UEFA just enforce a lot harder than the PL - if your arm is away from your body it's classed as intentional. This is a new law which states that any attacking handball that either directly scores a goal or leads to a pass that scores a goal is a foul, regardless of intent.

Fair enough, my mistake. The current rule is bloody stupid though.

If players do not intentionally use their arm, their body parts should be treated as part of the field of play, like referees or that beach ball from years ago.

Just watched the highlights of the Sheffield United game, VAR is ruining so much I'm glad they don't have it in all leagues... How on earth is that handball, it was headed into his arm from a few inches away, his arm is not in an unnatural position so what do the VAR guys see in this to disallow the goal

Terrible rules coming into football these days

A new handball law was introduced at the start of the season. If a side scores a goal either directly from a handball or it leads to a pass that results in a goal then the goal is ruled out, regardless of intent. The decision was corrent by the letter of the law. The issue has nothing to do with VAR, it's the offside law.

I celebrated it at the time, but we were massively helped out with that one - Terrible decision (I know it's the law, not VAR). However, Snodgrass is a **** and I enjoyed laughing at him. Came charging up to the home supporters laughing at us when he "scored"...

I see your point about it being the new handball rule but why cant the game be played the old fashioned way, none of this VAR rubbish, Spending 5-6 mins or even more at times just to make a decision...

Don't get me wrong I'm always happy to try new things out, especially if it will improve things but VAR and all these other new rules being added is ridiculous

Forget whether it's a handball or not for a moment...how is it not a foul? Rice gets nothing of the ball (except with his hand after the fact) and completely clatters the defender.

Well we finally got a VAR decision in our favour, from replays I have seen no reason to complain but maybe I have my 'red and white rose tinted we finally got a VAR decision tinted glasses on'

Up the blades!

I can't recall one instance of VAR taking >5 minutes

New rules which are unpopular are being consistently enforced by VAR, VAR isn't really the issue there.

Offside is my only issue with VAR and they should just make lines 'x' width, if they are overlapping it isn't offside, gives attacking team a minor advantage and would make decisions a lot more clear when they are offside (I'm sure there is an even better solution).
However I'll still take the current system over decisions like this influencing the biggest game of the season

I'm with Purdy, people moan about VAR but it's not VAR that's the real issue, it's the rules.

However, I don't really want the offside rule changed, I just think they need to add in a 'margin of error' onto the offside decisions as alluded to above.

People just need to stop having a whinge, I bet if they removed it you'd see the same complaints about refs getting stuff wrong all over again.

But then what is the margin of error? And say you make the margin...1cm, surely people will then be complaining that it was mm over the margin and should still be allowed?

I see what @BaZ87 and @Purdy are getting at but honestly why does the game of football need all these extra referees and rules, what's wrong with the old game

VAR was brought in because people moaned incessantly about refs getting things wrong, everybody was saying that football was backwards and needed to introduce more technology in the same way that rugby had. It's frustrating how much of a short term memory fans and even lots of people within the game have about all this. What's the alternative? If VAR was scrapped you'd only go back to the situation where the on-field officials get a battering from fans and pundits for getting things wrong.

I'd say VAR needs some adjustments when it comes to offside decisions in particular, but scrapping it would be a terrible idea imo.
