Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 14th January 2020]

Enjoyably dominant so far, Pepe should have squared to Laca and it would have been 0-2 though - a one goal lead is never enough with this side.

Re VAR - it's rubbish ATM but as long as the people implementing it listen and take criticism on board then it should get better each season... I have less confidence in other rules getting more and more convoluted though.

@nicktay2605 hmmm just seems pointless to me, I'd rather have the old ways, wrong decision are part of th game imo... We've all been at a game supporting our teams and had a decision against us but it is what it is..

Like I said before I'm all for trying new things but VAR is on my NO list :p

But then what is the margin of error? And say you make the margin...1cm, surely people will then be complaining that it was mm over the margin and should still be allowed?

I’m not paid not have time to do the testing but make it large enough that offsides look offside within a reasonable time frame and if they’re within it attacker advantage remains. At the moment we have fans of opposing teams thinking it’s nonsense goals are ruled out against them due to how minor it is and shoulders(armpits) often being the defining body part.

Relax it slightly but as Baz pointed out, Souness idea would ruin any offside traps and result in more teams sitting back.

VAR was brought in because people moaned incessantly about refs getting things wrong, everybody was saying that football was backwards and needed to introduce more technology in the same way that rugby had. It's frustrating how much of a short term memory fans and even lots of people within the game have about all this. What's the alternative? If VAR was scrapped you'd only go back to the situation where the on-field officials get a battering from fans and pundits for getting things wrong.

I'd say VAR needs some adjustments when it comes to offside decisions in particular, but scrapping it would be a terrible idea imo.

Agreed, outside of Atkinson I’ve had little to complain about refereeing this year as they got overruled, VAR offsides feel bad in the Woles/Bobby/Mane case but at least it’s consistent now, rules just need tweaked

(obviously helps we’ve won pretty much every game for nearly a year but still feel less frustrated this year than last)

So annoyed. Why do we just stop playing after a while?

That isn't really what I saw - Palace were content to sit back and concede possession (probably more than they wanted but still) at the start, until they went behind, then they switched tactically and made it more of a battle. We didn't figure quite how to counter that, but still only limited them to a couple of chances, one Leno saved and one which took a huge deflection and led to the goal, and in the end even down to 10 they played to win, and the best chance of the 2nd half fell to Pepe who if he'd have had the same luck as they did down the other end would have seen his shot go in.

Let's not forget, this team probably had the lowest confidence and organisation in the league a few weeks ago, so no matter how promising Arteta looks so far, he's inherited a proper turd and the team aren't suddenly going to turn into City MkII over the course of a few weeks. Got a hard-earned away point today and that'll have to do - at least we can enjoy Spurs getting a tonking later - and the league finish this year is just about finishing with heads held high since top 4 was long gone well before Arteta came in.

Just seen that tackle...nobody could argue that shouldn't have been a red.

Dreadful.

Was hoping we would smash Palace into the ground but hey at least we didn’t lose to them like we did last time round lol.

Hopefully Arteta will have a good idea who he wants to keep and who he wants to get rid of either this month or by summer time.

Team is getting there slowly but surely but it’s going to take some time by the looks of it.

Arteta has the team playing much more better compared to what he came into so that’s a plus.
