Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [12th - 15th December 2014]

You guys rate Blind then? I'd much prefer Carrick there when everyone is back fit, he uses the ball much better, I don't think Blind looks fantastic defensively either really.

It's a shame Herrera hasn't been started in the middle more, I think he works well just controlling possession and shifting the ball.

Mata has been very odd recently, he doesn't seem to 'do' much but he's scored and assisted loads.

The only criticism I would level at Blind is that he lacks pace and if he doesn't have it now, he never will :) Other than that he is technically very sound and from the games he has played in doesn't lose the ball that much. Although Fellaini is playing a level above what he did last season, I would much prefer him as an impact sub or a specialist role against certain opposition. That midfield birth he occupies now, my preference would be for Herrera or Blind.

It wasn't a steller performance but we still don't have a great defence and a settled first XI. Carrick is actually very good in defence as his composure is so useful when we have been so shakey this season in that position. Its nice that we can start a young forward for a game against Liverpool and still come out 3 - 0 winners so I don't think we will have any trouble with top 4 this year especially if we buy in January.

If we had a free scoring Falcao along with Di Maria and Blind back in the side then we should be good for the 2nd half of the season..

I think a top 4 finish will happen.

Largely to do with the inconsistency of this season bar Chelsea and Man City...

Mata is a quality player.

Indeed his assists speak for themselves. And he should be getting a run of games beside Herrera more it really annoys me no end the midfield is not Carrick Herrera and Mata. That is our best midfield, And Carrick brings solidity and a wider passing range and experience to them that Blind atm cannot offer.

I know Di Maria has has his best form in midfield too, But i think the team would be far better and settled if he was on the left up front alongside Rooney and RVP coming off the bench as a specialist to kill off games or seek goals. The amount of assists Carrick/Mata/Herrera/Di Maria/Rooney are capable off is downright stupid to have in your starting 11. Di Maria and Rooney and Mata could probably get 45 by themselves not to mention the goals they seem to be getting. Rooney and Mata and Di Maria look like one of them will score every game. No things are possibly really good if LVG will drop RVP.

I've honestly got no idea what Lovren was thinking for that goal. Ignoring the weak clearance, he actually ran towards Skrtel and the ball despite whilst watching the runner go in behind him :o

Third was pretty much always the Aim I guess, it's if they can improve on that I want to see.

Aguero out till the New Year, Dzeko and Kompany out till after Xmas. Then YaYa is at AcON.

At this stage it looks tough but with more players leaving the medical room than going in, January will give us an idea if 2nd is achievable

20 million quid, and he's a leader back there, our defensive rock...

Then again I'm not surprised by anything our defenders do, the longer Rodgers is here the worse they get.

Blonde, 30ish? If so it's probably his daughter Kelly.
Nah, brunette, late 30's, brownish skin colour I think, seen her a couple of times sitting next to him. It's not the owners wife I know that :p I'd like to know as she's proper hot.

We've conceded 17 goals and if we hadn't had Clatternburg reffing that game at Leicester, we'd probably be on 13-14 goals conceded, same as City and Chelsea, to think a 1/3 of Leicesters goal have come against us. Proper back 4 and I think we could challenge for the title and less reliance on DDG but at least it'll make him a better GK at the end of this. Evans need to be shipped out, wouldn't have him ahead of Blackett or McNair.

Jesus christ, the amount of people putting so much of the weight of that manu win due to de gea's saves, if he didn't make most of them he'd be ****ing garbage, our finishing was ****e, ...

Stirling's shots in particular seemed to be aimed straight into De Gea's body.
I agree that if De Gea couldn't stop some of those attempts at goal, we'd be saying how bad De Gea is.

He's been in trouble for a while but I don't agree with the people who think Suarez was the only reason we did so well last year ...

You're right. Sturridge was the other reason.
Those 2 scored 50+ goals for you last year!!!
When you take away 2 players who scored 50 goals, is it any wonder that Liverpool are struggling? Bayern, Barca, Real - they'd all struggle if they lost 2 strikers who can score 50+ goals.
Rodgers should've replaced quality with quality and Balotelli is not quality. Rodgers has left himself wide open to attack (and getting fired) because of this. AvB did exactly the same thing last season (selling Bale and not buying quality) - he got fired as a result.

There was a vote on RedCafe forum a while back. De Gea was voted as the best player so far this season. Blind was No.2.
What Blind does is the boring work that nobody else wants to do. This is what our team was missing last year - someone who can intercept passes and pass the ball to our creative midfielders. He also calmly takes the ball from our defenders (watch the number of back-passes which Man Utd make) and passes it to our creative midfielders, for an attack. I rate him very highly.

In saying that Carrick has played 6 games since returning from injury. We've won all 6 games. So maybe he is better. I'd like to see both Blind and Carrick play. Maybe this will make us defensively stronger.

After seeing the highlights I think there were one or two Liverpool shots (1 Stirling and one from Ballotelli) that were good saves , all the others were just DDG reading the game well and making himself big , very similar to the Arsenal game

Did amuse when DDG stuck his leg out looking in exactly the opposite direction to stop a shot from going in :D

Mata is a quality player.

Im not so sure he is a definite starter going forward (after the summer / maybe even Jan).

It only worked yesterday because Rooney was playing in CM because of Rojo's injury /forcing MC to move back into the centre-half position.

With someone like Strootman (or even Perez) able to play in CM, Rooney is a lot better in Mata's preferred role (and that's even without considering ADM either)

I always go back to those three games earlier in the season when Rooney was suspended where Mata played in every one (and I think 90 minutes for all three) and was pretty invisible , where as Rooney (especially with Herrera and Di Maria on the pitch) plays multiple roles in every game and usually a real captain's performance leading from the front - albeit with the occasional stupid move like vs WHU added also.

Aguero out till the New Year, Dzeko and Kompany out till after Xmas. Then YaYa is at AcON.

To much to hope for at the moment (especially given how many goals DDG is saving, in as much the timing of those goals making a much more difficult match as much as the amount).

Away from home I think even AV have potential to be a difficult game let alone anyone higher up. Spurs, Newcastle and Stoke are all potential slip ups before the New Year's hang-over has subsided (due to the restricted time between them as much as anything) - one or two dropped games (even draws) and we are back in the throng of 4-7 which is a real bunfight

The problem I see with United's play at present is that it is quite pedestrian through midfield with Fellaini in there. Carrick is also very much a defensive midfield player so we need someone to carry the ball forward or play more attacking passes. Fellaini is not the answer. I'd take Blind any day over him.

Mata - i just can't make my mind up about him. Where is his best position? At present he seems to play where other players play more often than not.

I suspect that our best formation when fit an healthy

De Gea
Rafael Rojo Smalling/Jones Shaw

Herrera Carrick Blind

Rooney

Van Persie Di Maria
