Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [12th - 17th August 2016]

Is that not a second yellow for Costa? Commentators can talk all they like about a 'genuine attempt to win the ball' but that was a pretty bad challenge all said and done.

Put it this way if he wasn't already on a yellow he'd be booked now 100%.

Maybe. Had he done that to an out field player he'd have got a 2nd yellow I'm sure. I think the fact that had he won the ball it would have been a goal meant he had to make the challenge and I think the ref's taken that into consideration.

Nah thats a straight red. Horrible challenge above the ankle.

Interesting team selection from Pep - 3 fullbacks and a central defender with questionable defensive capabilities, with not much protection in front. Could be an exciting season at the Etihad.

Carragher and Neville done some decent analysis on it on MNF. In theory it's actually a pretty clever way of defending. Kolarov's obviously at CB for his ability on the ball rather than his defending and I'm sure long term they'll bring somebody else in that's more comfortable at CB but the way the fullbacks work is clever. When City have the ball they effectively have a front 3 with 2 number 10's and because Fernandinho's dropped back alongside the CB's to make it a back 3, their fullbacks are able to push into central midfield positions to cut counter attacks off high up the pitch and also enable City to keep the opposition pinned back.

As I said during the game, it's easier to do when you have Lahm and Alaba rather than Clichy and Sagna but the system's fascinating and it will be easy to see how teams try to counter it.

Kante was excellent for Chelsea last night.
I've only seen him in pre-season or on MOTD or in the odd live Leicester game but you don't really appreciate someone like him until you see him full scope and are actually looking at what he does.
He's one of those players who just seems to pop up in the right place at the right time doing the right thing.
Could be the bargain of the season at £30m
