Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13 - 17th April 2013]

I watched the Man City Chelsea game after and I'm honestly confused as to how we have run away with the league this year. Those two teams played some incredible end to end football.

That's the reason why we've run away with the league

Those two teams played some incredible end to end football.

They both get up for the "big" games very well, but they are also pretty average in the other 28 or so EPL games this season

Its also wrong (imo) to compare a cup semi-final to EPL games directly. The only way they can be similar is a title decider (if the league is close enough that year).

Damn got a tough game coming up tommorrow night against Everton, hopefully we can nab 3 pts from that game but worst comes to worst ill take a draw in the end.

Hopefully we will put in a better game than we did against Norwich, we had lots of possession but they managed to score first and if it wasnt for a dodgy penalty given, i dont think we would got anything from that game. Left it a bit late but still should have smashed 4-5 past Norwich with all the possession we had. Our defenders still leave a lot to be desired for, i just dont understand why the hell they cant defend properly :/

Anyhow please Arsenal 3 pts tommorrow, cant afford to lose or drop points this late in the season and id rather not rely on Spurs/Chelsea to drop points in their next few games.

We need to take maximum points from our games until we play united for me to start feeling confident of a top 4 finish. I don't like the look of our away games, potential banana skins for sure. Well, most games are for Arsenal tbh :p

Horse! Huh! Good God.
What was it punched for?
Cos we lost 3 nothing.
Say it again, y'all.

:D

Any idea why Gibbs started? Thought our Spanish lad had been looking quite solid.

No idea but taking a wild guess, its Wenger probably thinking hes our starter at LB so decided to put him in instead of Monreal. I actually prefer Monreal at LB, he doesnt seem to make many silly mistakes as Gibbs does and the best thing is that he isnt a walking, talking sicknote.

It was his stupid trip that created Norwich's first goal, such a silly place to trip the guy up although it wasnt intentional from what i saw but still giving away freekicks in dangerous areas isnt helping us.

Looks like Rosicky, who had a blinding game against WBA is out injured yet again :/....did his hamstring against WBA. I really dont understand why Wenger perserveres with our injury ridden players ie Rosicky and Diaby being the worst culprits.

I thought he was far superior to Gibbs, solid defensively and not made of glass. He does seem ok going forward too. Don't understand Wenger at all recently. He said the other day he wishes Rosicky would see his career out at Arsenal. The man can't put a run of games together and frankly isn't that good. Considering how Pires got treated it's just mental.

I don't think Gibbs is as bad as some people make out but from what I've seen of Monreal so far, to me he's the stronger defender. Gibbs might become good (he's still young) but has to knuckle down and improve on all aspects of his game.

Rosicky has been very good the past few games and is much needed for us to get 4th spot. He adds tempo to our play in midfield and is a lot more direct with his running and passing, thus opening up more space for the likes of jack, theo and santi. Much rather have him the team than Ramsey.

Indeed, i just dont get why he is still in our squad when Wenger could go out and potentially buy a replacement who is fitter and could be better. Sure for the 5-6 games he plays, he does ok...from what i have seen of him is that every yr he will have one superb game then gets injured. So for me he isnt consistent enough, mind you with all the injuries he has...its no wonder he isnt that consistent.

Gibbs i think is better at going forward and getting crosses in, although hes not that great a crosser in all honesty and neither is Sagna for that matter. but his defending and tracking back leaves a lot to be desired for:p. In that respect i also think Monreal is a much better defender than Gibbs is. But one thing im happy about is that at least the LB position is more or less set with Gibbs and Monreal rotating. RB is one position id like us to strengthen, Jenks is good and better than Sagna, who i think is well past his best now so another decent RB in the summer and i think we are set at both positions.

As for Rosicky?? as i said if he can stay fit and get some consistency into his game then i have no problem with him. Problem being is that he is neither fit enough to get any consistency through the season. Id rather we replaced him with someone who is younger, fitter and has the potential to be just as good if not better than him. Same goes for that fool Diaby, who is now out for the whole season...his injuries are hilarious in all honesty. He is one player who adds nothing to the squad and the sooner hes put out to pasture so to speak the better. As all he is doing is sucking up wages by being on the injury table for most of the season:p. Again i just dont understand Wenger and why he sticks by him even though its plain to see hes not good enough and secondly hes injured far too often.

/end DM rant:p...no doubt he will come in here soon with both barrels blazing telling us that we are all wrong in what we think:p

Haha. Time to batten down the hatches :D

I agree with all of that apart from Gibbs getting crosses in, he's nearly as bad as what Clichy was at crossing :o

Obviously we need to replace Rosicky or add in that position, I was just talking about our current situation with the players at our disposal. You can see the effect he has had on this team in the past few games, we looked lost going forward against Norwich without him. I remember he did the same at some point last season too.

LOL no i get what your saying about Rosicky, when hes in the mood he can still change the game around..i remember last yr he did it against the Spurs or was it the year before he had a blinder against them.

Still i just wish he would stay fit rather than get injured every other game as its pretty fustrating to see a player of his calibre sitting on the injury table rather than being on the pitch.

CLichy didn't cross that much as he had no target, his crossing at City is better than anything anyone at Arsenal is producing, he's getting forward far more for City because they barely have a winger, but they play him in behind much better. We have different players down the left since Clichy left and Gibbs gets far more passes into area's we didn't really play Clichy in to. Podolski is(or was :( ) always passing people in on the left, as is Santi/Wilshire/etc.

Gibbs though can't defend for crap, hes easily beaten, positionally awful. His only chance of turning into a good player is Wenger leaving or leaving himself. IF he stays at Arsenal with Wenger there will be no impotus to change as Wenger thinks he's fantastic, same way Walcott doesn't improve and half our players go backwards after joining(Verm, Sagna, etc, etc).

I did say, and was called out for it, when we signed Monreal that he looks good, I'd be happy about it, but I have a nagging feeling that Gibbs is one of Wenger's prefered players, and will be back in the team every time he's fit.........

There isn't any point having top players if Wenger has an arbitrary list of players he loves and will play for no reason at all, Diaby, Ramsey, Gibbs, Gervinho, Sagna. Sagna has been gash for years now and Jenks is easily the better right back, but the second he was fit, Jenks was completely forgotten about by Wenger, I fear the same for Monreal.

On age, Gibbs is 23, not old but, 23 is the time Ronaldo's go from potential to epic, its rarely a time someone goes from really quite ****, to good/great. I can't see any current potential for Gibbs to be a great left back, he's fast, thats it, he can't defend, he's not great offensively.

Arshavin's last full season for us was 10 goals 18 assists, was probably our second or third best player that season, Wenger randomly decided to destroy him, he's done it to multiple players, that is Arsenal's problem and why I wasn't overly thrilled to get Monreal, not because he's not a good player, but because there is a crazy dictator incharge who makes decisions based on something that certainly isn't how good a player is. Even now its too early to say, Wenger might just have been resting Monreal, who knows. We'll know after a few more months, of course that assumes Gibbs is fit enough to be in the team..... which isn't even that likely :p

Look at Gervinho/Podolski, Wenger played Gervinho all last year despite being utterly turd, this year Podolski has been 10 times the player Gervinho was, yet in the past couple months he's not started a single league game, and has been less involved elsewhere, including not getting on in the Blackburn game we lost(when looking for goals we brought on Gervinho, Ramsey and AOC, rather than one of our best scorers/assisters for the season). There are signs Podolski is being pushed aside as well, its a genuine concern that Wenger doesn't like, I dunno, certain personalities, or people that stand up to his stupid decisions or speak out about the problems in the team, those who actually know how to win, have won stuff before and ask wtf is going on most likely IMHO.

Rosicky was fit for a lot of last year and played a lot, up till that Spurs game Arsenal fans and the media alike had spent the season asking wtf was he being started for, he was terrible for 2/3rd's of a season up to that game, had 3 good games in a row, got a new contract, went crap again........ much like Giggs gets good for a month before contract negotiations, and Walcott actually tried in a few games, and has since disappeared to spend his 100k a week anywhere but on the field.

Rosicky, with new contract, has now had another season he was barely fit, after a season in which he was miraculously available far more frequently than before, when he was looking for a new deal.

We thrashed Spurs and it had very little to do with Rosicky, then he got a goal in the return leg against Milan, a team that turned up knowing they'd won, a team that had more chances, had more possession and we tried to kick off the park. After the Milan game, Rosicky played quite a bit and was as anonymous as he was before the Spurs game. He had 2 "good" games out of 36 Arsenal appearances last year, and he's had one this year, against a West brom team that has been dire losing 8 of their last 13 now, winning only 3.

That is a long way from saying Rosicky can really effect Arsenal, a long long long way.

We can't even say if he could stay fit he could get form and really get back to his first season with Arsenal, he played 36 times for Arsenal last year and had two good performances in two odd games while being cack for the rest of the season.

Rosicky was playing at the same level Ramsey was for the majority of last season, and has simply been unavailable this season. Maybe if he'd not been injured he'd still be the as good as he was in 2006-07, that was his last really good season for Arsenal.

Clichy's crossing was absolutely shocking. He never picked out a man, ever and yes, he put plenty of crosses (if you can call them that) whilst at Arsenal. To be fair its very close between Gibbs and Clichy of worse Arsenal left back for 30 years. I'm not including Santos in that because, we never played there even when he was told to! :p

No, Rosicky wasn't anomalous before and after the Spurs game last season. He was one of our most effective midfielders.

Not sure why you've gone to ranting about Arshavin and Gervinho/Podolski

I've not really seen him play that much for city. He was alright as a defender up until towards the end of 07/08 season, then he started making costly mistakes on a regular basis and it all went downhill from there. Also won't help a defender's reputation being playing for arsenal the past 4-5 seasons but the way DM thinks that every layer we let go is awesome and every player we keep or bring in is rubbish is just, wrong. That's my opinion anyway :p
