Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13 - 17th April 2013]

Clichy's crossing was absolutely shocking. He never picked out a man, ever and yes, he put plenty of crosses (if you can call them that) whilst at Arsenal. To be fair its very close between Gibbs and Clichy of worse Arsenal left back for 30 years. I'm not including Santos in that because, we never played there even when he was told to! :p

No, Rosicky wasn't anomalous before and after the Spurs game last season. He was one of our most effective midfielders.

Not sure why you've gone to ranting about Arshavin and Gervinho/Podolski

Its simple, people are wondering why Monreal wasn't getting played, the same question applies to why Arshavin wasn't played, when Jenk's isn't played, why Podolski has barely been used in two months, and why Gervinho/Gibbs/Sagna/Diaby/Ramsey/etc/etc get such long runs in the team no matter how bad they are.

Also yes, go back and look at media reports AND on here, everyone was saying what the hell is the point of Rosicky and asking why he was starting, he was completely pointless for the first 2/3rd's of last season, and did nothing towards the end of the season either.

Never mind his crossing Clichy has become a very good defender since he left Arsenal

Clichy was a very good defender at Arsenal, a defence and a defender are entirely different things, the Arsenal defence while he was there was going downhill, people can't seem to separate out the player and the defence. 80% of Vermaelen's mistakes are making up for the others being out of position, etc, etc. Clichy looked instantly back to the player in his first couple years in the first team with us(when we had a better defence), basically the second he joined City. Why, its the defence as a unit at Arsenal that was the problem, not Clichy, and considering he can cross fine at City, claiming he can't cross is daft.

I've not really seen him play that much for city. He was alright as a defender up until towards the end of 07/08 season, then he started making costly mistakes on a regular basis and it all went downhill from there. Also won't help a defender's reputation being playing for arsenal the past 4-5 seasons but the way DM thinks that every layer we let go is awesome and every player we keep or bring in is rubbish is just, wrong. That's my opinion anyway :p

No, not every player who leaves is great, the fundamental problem is the players who SHOULD leave because they aren't good, don't leave... hence great players are the ones leaving(mostly). Nasri was meh, I said so, he was massively over rated, Song is poo, Djourou is crap, Denilson is crap, Arsenal's problem is fundamentally that we've been losing our best players, while keeping the worst ones.

I also haven't said every player we've brought in is rubbish. This is just the nonsense people come out with on this forum. Santi is quality, just not at Cesc's ability, Giroud isn't bad at all, but not being used effectively, AOC has potential but is barely being used and used in the wrong position often. Ramsey was very promising when we got him, he isn't any more, injury, the general Arsenal thing where quite a lot of players end up much worse than when we got them, I don't know.

Monreal looks quality, Kos looks decent, more than good enough, Sagna was excellent for 9 months, downhill since then. Podolski is brilliant, Arteta is excellent..... Gervinho IS rubbish, Santos IS rubbish, Mert is meh, I think he's just way to slow, looks completely out of his depth. Jenks is very decent with a lot of potential.

Whats surprising about this, crap players stay at top team on big wages because there aren't any offers to do better, great players not winning stuff at Arsenal... leave. Its only natural that in our position we lose our best players and keep the worst... not least when Wenger keeps offering the dross new contracts.

Absolutely massive game for us tonight away at Sheffield United. Brentford haven't been this close to The Championship for over a decade... and we've only spent one season outside of the bottom two divisions since WW2!

Hopefully Sheff UTD's win on Saturday was a false dawn, as three wins from our final three games will see us promoted as champions. I'm currently living in a world of perpetual anxiety at the moment! Long journey for this as well as the club are running free coaches :)

^^ good luck! Was so pleased you won on Saturday after having to endure a couple of pomp fans giving it large about the fa cup on Saturday morning when all we wanted to do was have a quick drink before getting e train south.

Nice the club are putting on free coaches for it too!

Yeah good luck. Getting in to the Championship is only the start... Very few clubs go straight back down, or even in a few years it seems. Hopefully I will add Griffin Park to my list of grounds visited next season(... Well actually, hopefully not;))

Hope you get absolutely battered! (I'm a UTD fan) We played brilliantly on Saturday, but I'm also worried it was just because it's a new manager, but the way the fans got behind the team, because of Morgan was such an improvement. I'm so nervous. :(

I said at the start of the season Sheffield United (I feel dirty typing that) would get promoted, League One is a good league with a surprisingly good standard of football and it at times becomes a real slog to get to the promised land of the Championship, I still think that Sheffield United will be promoted, I felt a bit sad when Wilson jumped / pushed but I think that much like Sheffield Wednesday last season this change is there to take the club in a slightly new direction on the pitch and give the team and fans a much needed boost to end the season with.

Two games in hand, can go second if maximum points are taken. I hope that Sheffield United do come up, I really do because I love the Steel City Battles :).

So, yeah, as much as it pains me to say it, good luck to Sheffield United with their final push this season, I hope Doncaster come back up too, I've got a lot of love for the club :).

Should be a nervy game for both sets of fans! We haven't exactly been convincing away from home recently, so if we go 4-5-1 I can see Utd getting the win, but 4-4-2 should be a lot more effective. Our trip to Bramall Lane was eye-opening, and Utd tore us to pieces!

Sheffield and back today, Hartlepool and back (overnight!) on Saturday... I'm actually looking forward to the season ending! Not sure I can take the play-offs with our record :)

Pingwing - on Saturday I finally understood why Southampton fans hate Portsmouth... If the pitch invasion wasn't bad enough (including them trying to dismantle the goals) then Pompey fans diving head first into the home sections to start fights was something I've not seen before

If the option is stick Rooney in midfield and sign another striker or sign no-one and continue as we are now, I'd take the former. If there is truly no midfielders that we can afford that are available that are better than what we have then make best with what we have.

I do think he would make a better midfielder than a striker, not that he isn't a fantastic striker! But I think his vision and work rate would be even better in the middle. There aren't many people that has the passing ability he has, so it would make sense to try him a bit further back, and see if it can be put to better use. This is just IMO of course.

No. I think with a bit of time spent he would be a brilliant midfielder.

Cant see it myself nor do I want to see it, when injury free he's a 30 goal a season striker, why would we want to lose that?

Apart from some nice cross field passes and for 20 minutes some nice link up play with Carrick what did he actually do Sunday? Apart from that 20 minute spell the game kinda passed him by imo.
