Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 16th April 2012]

How have Doncaster been relegated?

I thought they spent loads on players this season?

They bought in mercenaries like Chimbonda, Beye, Diouff IIRC, and others, and I think it was the last game, or one before maybe that they didn't start any of the "premier league" players they got, because they were so ****. They bought guys in on massive wages, who were **** and didn't give a monkeys about playing well, absolutely serves them right for trying to buy the league and failing so spectacularly.

lol, Beye started today, got a goal, and got sent off.

That was a half Arsenal youth team, and the other teams you've done over with similar goal lines are Wigan, Wolves and maybe Blackburn. City have done that to, Utd, Spurs, Swansea, Blackburn, Norwich twice, West Brom.

Anyone can put 5 past one of the bottom 3, City are what, the only team to do it to TWO top four teams, and a bunch of top half teams, and several relegation sides.

If I've worked it out right, first half of the season Utd won by a 3 goal margin or more 5 times, City managed it 8 times, since xmas and City's form has been worse, they've managed a 3 goal or more winning margin 5 times, Utd have done it twice. So City have won by 3 goals or more 13 times, and utd, 7 times, or City have done it almost twice as often.... certainly seems suggestive of being more capable of "thrashing" teams, not least when you compare who they've done it to, generally speaking much higher up the table teams than Utd.

I haven't watched very game that City and United have played this season, but having watched Norwich, home & away against both, I can say that City are the better side when on form.

We went to Old Trafford while United were on a good run of form, we played well and were unlucky not to get atleast a point, we played equally well when we went to the Etihad and got turned over and lost 5-1. United came to Carrow road and were again very lucky to come away with all 3 points as we played well, City came here, and despite a good performance from the canaries, we got thumped again.

However, what decides a champion is not the results they get on a good day, but how many points they can get on a bad day. And United have been far better at scraping victories from fairly mediocre performances than Man City have.

Mancini - "No we don't have a chance" "Manchester 5 points a head, it's too far for us" "

Reporter - "Is there too much pressure on you?
Mancini - "Haha, we don't have pressure, it's for 2 or 3 weeks we don't have pressure"

While I don't particularly want to get into slanging stats around as it doesn't always mean much - I've just taken a look at the goals for and goals against columns which appear to show that City have scored 7 more goals than United and conceded 1 fewer goal (albeit United have a game in hand). If they're crushing teams more regularly then you would surely expect to see more of a difference there wouldn't you? For all that City might have thrashed more teams it doesn't seem to have made all that much difference in either goals or points.

Care to elaborate

not really, it's pretty obvious. it's about what happens on the day, ie, we put 5 past newcastle, they put 3 past you, you put 3 past us. though to put it bluntly, city were well in control of the game where they put 6 past you before evans was sent off.

sad news about morosini

A strange day.

First off;

RIP to Morosini!

Secondly; **** off Colchester.

Thirdly; I hope this FA Cup run doesn't keep Kenny in a job, I'd like to see Liverpool playing good football again, in Europe and challenging for a top four spot.

Just got back from the Birmingham game, 2 stupid goals we gave away was criminal, but like I send before no game is easy now. From the 2nd half onwards it was all us and Bristol City really do know how to waste time. This was a game we really should have started quickly and be more assertive, but we let Bristol play on the ball. Got 2 away games next which will be even more difficult, but on a positive we still in the playoffs.

I don't remember saying it should have made a difference. As Shami said, and I and a few others said last week. Utd at their best, haven't been brilliant, City at their best, have been better than Utd. But that doesn't make a whole load of difference, for the umpteenth time, you can be OK and win 1-0, or be epically brilliant on a never before seen scale and win 12-0, its 3 points either way.

City are an unsurprisingly more inconsistant team, consistency that Utd have comes from being a cohesive long term unit of players. The fundamental point is, when City are at their best, their very best is better than Utd's very best, they just haven't reached that all season long and neither have Utd.

IE I'd honestly give City a better chance of beating Barca IF they played to their best, than if Utd played to their best.

Hmm, its also quite odd, from a quick glance at a list of results you see that City win bigger more often, and their losses have been smaller. They've lost 5 games by never more than one goal, and I think 4 of those were 1-0 losses, and another a 1-2 loss. So never by more than a one goal margin. Likewise Utd have lost only 4 times, but one of those was by 3 goals, another by 5 goals. it seems almost absurd how close they are.

Likewise, though this includes losses/draws/wins, Utd have played 9 games where they have only scored one goal, and City, only 6 games.

It's really odd basically, they've scored more when they've won big, they'd done that more often, they've conceded less goals when they've lost, and they've scored 1 less than Utd, yet there is only a 7 goal difference.

One major thing is City haven't scored in 5 games this season 4 losses, 1 draw, Utd have only failed to score in 2 games all season(Wigan/Newcastle).
